Quite often the problem with spin cycles is that the cycle cannot start until a sufficient amount of wash/rinse water has drained. So what will often happen is that the washer drains, the cycle starts, a lot of water comes out of the clothes, it stops, waits for the water to drain, then restarts. If the drain pump or drain lines are restricted or blocked or the pump is faulty, the unit may never achieve spin cycle.

SOURCE: Washer will fill with water but the agitator won't spin.

No agitation or spin in any cycle? If so and the machine will drain check the coupler.

SOURCE: doesnt agitate or spin.

Mine is 1 1/2 years old and this worked for me

unplug from power for at least 30 seconds

turn the dial to spin but don't pull out

plug back in to power and open and shut completely so switch is engaged solidly 11 times in 15 seconds.

pull out knob to turn on

This should clear a error code.

hope it helps!

GE washer, a little over 2yrs old - washer will fill, agitate, and drain, but will not go through the spin cycle.

Drive motors are often a source of trouble. These motors often run in forward and reverse. They spin one way to agitate and the other to spin. Just because it works in one direction, does not mean that the other direction cannot be burnt out. This often happens and just because ?it works? people think the motor is okay. The motor still needs to be replaced if either direction goes bad.

GE manufactured washers use a clutch system. This slowly bring the spin cycle up to speed as the water goes out of the washer. When this becomes worn the spin will not be as fast or may not spin at all. If your clutch needs to be replaced, you may want to hire that out as it is quite a project for most DIY?ers.

The final problem would be the bearing or basket drive. This gets worn or even will get tight so that the basket will not spin freely. If this goes bad you will usually have excessive noise when the washer spins. This too is a project that you may want help with.

As you can see there are many things that can go wrong to make problems with the spin cycle of a washer. You will have to do some detective work to figure out exactly what the problem is with your washing machine.

Agitator not turning during cycle

Well, it sounds like you've done your homework. My first suspect would have been the agitator dogs too, but you said they were fine. Another likely suspect would have been the motor coupler, but you said the washer spins during the spin cycle. If the coupler was bad the unit would fill, but wouldn't agitate or spin. Plus, it would make an awful noise. I would have also suspected a clutch assembly, but you said the wash tub can spin. Normally, when the clutch goes bad, the drum won't spin, or spins slow. Another suspect could have been a bad lid switch, but the washer would have filled and stopped, without agitating or spinning. The only remaining suspect that I'm aware of is the gear case (transmission). Checking under the washer can give you some clues. Normally, when a gear case starts to go bad, they leak an amber colored oil. You may find puddles or drips under the washer. If you see no signs of oil the gear case could still be defective, however. But, before you go through all the trouble, double check the agitator one more time. Completely remove it from the tub and check the under side to ensure the grooves that grip the top of the gear case shaft have not been worn smooth. I hope this may have been some help to you.
