SOURCE: Deck belt keeps tearing up then falling off

If it's an idler pulley, where the belt changes direction from the engine - yes it should turn freely. If it's a double pulley where the drive pulley from the engine connects with the deck/blade pulley, then it it's not going to turn totally free because of the blade pulleys connected to it. But in all cases, none of the pulleys should be seized. Try using WD40 or PB Blaster on the pulley bearing surface to loosen it up - or a new pulley...

SOURCE: I'm having trouble replaceing the motion drive

Often there is a keeper on the back of the pulley, and the belt must go inside the keeper. Get an inspection mirror up in there to look if necessary. Start by putting the belt on the transaxle pulley, then on the PTO pulley, then on the idler, last have someone sit on the mower and depress the clutch pedal while you put the belt over that pulley.

My chevy maLIBU ALTERNATOR BELT SPINS THEN STOP CAR WON'T GO ANYWHERE

Vehicles: Chevy (GM) Malibu 2001-2005 3.1L SFI OHV 6-cylinder

Your battery has died since the alternator is not charging it. Jumping the car works to start the engine since the Malibu is using the energy of the second car to start and turn the engine.
Its possible that your belt may not be correctly routed or tensioned.

Check your 3.1L engine accessory drive belt routing. The arrow points in the direction in which the drive belt moves.

Accessory Drive Belt Installation/Removal
GM 3.1L Engine

NOTE
Routine inspection of the belt may reveal cracks in the belt ribs. These cracks will not impair the belt performance. The belt should be replaced if the belt slip occurs if a section of the belt ribs are missing. A single serpentine drive belt is used to drive all engine accessories. All belt driven accessories are rigidly mounted with the belt tension maintained by a spring loaded tensioner. The indicator on the movable portion of the tensioner must be within the limits of the marks of the stationary portion of the tensioner. Any reading outside of these limits indicates either a defective belt or tensioner.

(1) Remove engine mount.
(2) Rotate the drive belt tensioner in a clockwise motion using a breaker bar or serpentine belt tool.
(3) Remove the drive belt.

(2) Install the drive belt. Connect the serpentine drive belt last to the power steering pulley.
(3) Install engine mount.

How do you put on a drive belt?

Hi Janie, Thanks for your question. To replace a drive belt.
1, Remove the rubber platter mat to expose the platter.

3. Remove the old belt and wipe the platter pulley and motor pulley with an alcohol swab to remove any old belt residue.
4. Place the new belt around the platter pulley making sure t is sitting flat without any twists.
5. Flip platter over the right way up. There are1or 2 larger rectangle shaped cut outs in the platter.
6. Through the cut out pinch up the belt and slip a finger or belt hook between the platter pulley and the belt gripping the belt ready to fit over the motor pulley.
7. Align the centre hole of the platter with the spindle and place platter back into position keeping a grip on the belt.
8. Slip belt over motor pulley and give the platter a light clockwise rotation to ensre the belt is riding correctly.
9. Replace the rubber mat and then run the turntable to ensure correct operation.
Job done.

Note the new belt should sit on the platter pulley and not fall off when the platter is flipped over the correct way up.

When changing speeds between 33 and 45 always be sure that the platter is turning to ensure proper placement and rpm.

All the best, John. [email protected].

WARNING Do not attempt to check belt tension with a belt tension gauge on vehicles equipped with an automatic belt tensioner.

Drive belts on diesel engines are equipped with a spring loaded automatic belt tensioner. This belt tensioner will be used on all belt configurations, such as with or without air conditioning.
  1. Depending on the year of the vehicle, a 3/8 inch or 1/2 inch square hole is provided in the automatic belt tensioner. Attach a 3/8 inch or 1/2 inch drive-long handle ratchet to this hole.
  2. Rotate ratchet and tensioner assembly clockwise (as viewed from front) until tension has been relieved from belt.
  3. Remove belt from water pump pulley first.
  4. Remove belt from vehicle.

To install:

WARNING When installing the accessory drive belt, the belt must be routed correctly. If not, engine may overheat due to water pump rotating in wrong direction. The correct belt with correct length must be used. Position drive belt over all pulleys except water pump pulley.

  1. Attach a 1/2 inch ratchet to tensioner.
  2. Rotate ratchet and belt tensioner clockwise. Place belt over water pump pulley. Let tensioner rotate back into place. Remove ratchet. Be sure belt is properly seated on all pulleys.

Serpentine belt in a 1995 Mercury sable

I have the same car and last night my belt slipped off. The top small pulley backed it's self out. The problem is in most cars the pulleys are reverse threaded so this wont happen, in ours not so much. The pully spins loose with the turn of the belt so it has to be tightened way down. IT's a pain. Here is a diagram I found and You need a 15mm wrench, which doesn't just come in most sets. Good Luck

The book says "Using a 15 mm socket or wrench on bolt attaching drive belt tensioner pulley, rotate drive belt tensioner clockwise. Make sure spring keeper engages into slot." I would put a socket on the 15 mm pulley bolt and a long handle for leverage. Thats one tight spring.
