Agitator keeps coming off

I have a Maytag SAV-5 model, I think. That is what the use and care guide says. I noticed my washer was making a grinding type noise so when I checked it I found that when it fills with water and starts to wash the agitator pops up and doesn't turn. I can push it back down and turn it slightly and it acts like it locks into place but one light tug up with my fingers dislodges it. What can I do to keep it down and in place?

My model is a Maytag SAV 365AAWW and I found a very similar comment on here and the response was to fix the bolt inside the tower portion. Well my husband took it apart and found no place for a bolt. The tower on the inside just has slits in it and the fabric softner dispenser inside has small teeth that possibly fit into the slits on the tower.....I am attaching the post I found that matches what mine does....This was posted by Zooville back in September..........................................
"On my Maytag SAV365ZAW, for the purpose of my issue, if you consider
the agitator as 3 pieces. The fabric softener cup, the tower, and the
base. The issue is the tower (with fabric softener cup attached) just
lifts off the base. So when filled with water and clothes the
agitator/tub moves the clothes in a cirluar fashion,
but the tower floats up and can not direct the clothes in a rotating
top to bottom motion. I can not find a place for a locking screw
anywhere, no existing screws, and no holes where one may go. I've
removed the fabric softener cup and there is no where to tighten or
replace any screw to lock the tower down. Additionally, when I pull the
tower piece off the base I see no where any screw could be used to
    attach the two pieces."

I snapped off the fabric softener cup, washed everything out and still found no place for a hold down bolt. My husband, love that man, used super glue in the tines that slide together and so far it has held. Crazy. The only other thign we have been able to figure out is we would have to buy a whole new agitator assembly, all of the pieces that make the water and laundry move. So far that is all we have been able to figure out. If you come across anything else, please let me know.

I have a Maytag PAV2300aww top load washer. I load my clothes, the water fills the tub and then when it starts to wash, the agitator pops off. I can hold it down and it will work properly, but as soon as i let go, it pops off again. I like the super glue idea! If you have and other solutions I would love to hear them. I would just like to buy a new agitator without buying the whole assembly. I have already had 3 repairs on this machine within the first 3 years. I bought a Maytag because of it's name and I will not buy another.

I have the same problem. The agitator came off and I can hold it down and it works fine but when I let it go it pops up.

  • sherripete Mar 18, 2009

Re: The problem in question is the retaining clips are broken within the upper part of the agitator. Flip the upper assembly over and look down inside the bore and you will see a translucent plastic ratcheting ring with eight plastic extruded tabs on it.These plastic clips snap in place to hold the upper part of the agitator to the lower base.
My problem is how to separate the upper agitator to expose the internal plastic retaining clips so that i may repair the upper agitator without buying a new assembly?

I am having the same problem! The agitator bobs up when the wash starts. We have let it go because the clothes still get clean but now we have a big leak underneath the washer. All the hoses are in place and dry but as soon as the agitator starts to pop up with the tub full it will start to leak near the center of the underneath. We have it up on bricks so we can see better. Maytag will cover agitator and inside drum but I will have to pay for labor. What kind of warranty is that?! After reading all of these posts it sounds like an inherent problem. Sounds like a recall.

My agitator doesn't come out or pop off, it just doesn't turn unless you hold down on top of it and kinda help it along. Also doesn't make a grinding sound.

I also have a maytag with the same problem the lifting of the agitator when it is full. I called the repair man and told him my problem, he advised me to buy a new one!! with parts and labor it would cost me close to the same amount. I am trying the super glue first.

This all sounds so familiar. I am in the same boat as everyone else. My clothes however are not being washed properly and I am on the verge of buying a new washer. I have tried everything. Sounds like the only real solution is to just buy the whole new agitator.

As far as I can tell, the upper agitator just wears out where it snaps on the inner shaft over time. This is what I did. I wrapped the upper part of the inner shaft ( where it has the slots ) with duck tape ( about 2 wraps all the way around the top ). Just to build it up some. I then used a knife to cut the duck tape where the slots are. I pushed the upper agitator back on. It's a bit hard to push it back on because of the tape, but that's what I wanted. The agitator now fits tight and stays on. It's been about a week so far, and all is well. I'm sure over time I might have to replace the tape, but so be it.

I sent this diagram to see if maybe you were looking in the wrong area for the hold down bolt. It should sit down inside the auger tower after you remove the fabric softener cup (be sure you remove all the cup assembly on some models, they can separate). I havent seen a Maytag (or Maytag hybrid (i.e Amama) or others) not have a hold down bolt, but I could imagine there might be. Let me know how it goes, and if you need any further information. I will keep looking for more information for you as well. Jim

The bolt holds the shaft to the agitator. Then the agitator/shaft (now one piece) just slides down into the transmission. I find no way to keep it from floating up. Tho it seems find when washing heavy items like jeans. It more the light stuff or bulky items like bedding

Washer makes loud grinding noise during agitation and does not agitate - it is a maytag atlantis.... fix or replace?

I suspect the thrust bearing kit is bad. This comes with great instructions and is easily replaced. I would recommend changing this before replacing the machine. You are not out much if it does not work, but I am confident you will get it going by replacing this! This is a VERY common problem with these washers and the new kit has been redesigned.

Agitation issues. Everything else appears/works normally.

I just encountered the same problem. I think the operation of the machine is such that the motor turns one direction for the spin cycle, and the other direction for the agitate cycle. I am replacing my motor, as I think i have a bad winding on the reverse. I will let you know.
