Geez dont keep spending money if your not sure. It sounds like your starter is not throwing in far enough to engage with the ring gear. Please do your hip pocket a favor and get an auto technician to check it before buying a new starter as well. You can also remove the starter and check the gear to make sure its not worn as some are plastic.
Nothing should engage when the engine starts running. The torque converter and transmission pump will spin faster, but not make noise. If they do it wont go away. If the noise is there as the engine start running on it's own. I would guess it is the starter bendix not disengaging after you let off the key. This would entail a new starter. Beings that you have a 98, you might be able to get just the bendix. But you have to take the starter apart to replace it. It's what push the gear forward.
your sarter is toast. maybe accidentally hit the button while riding or corrosion in the switch made the connection. Nonotheless, you need a new sarter.
test voltage at the starter while pushing start button. its also possible that the factory ignition kill is activated, try holding up the lanyard button and repeatadly hit the start button if the alarm is engaged then you should hear the starter barely kick every couple of seconds so then just unlock it. and last and certainly the most common, starter solenoid, they go bad all the time. be sure to check your fuses first though.
The starter is under a cover on the left side of the motor. Just behind the cylinder head.
If you hear a clicking noise when you go to start the bike with the starter not engaging. Then its probably the solinoid.
It is under the left side cover by the battery. It is round with two heavy gauge wires running to the top of it. Tap it with a handle of a screwdriver a few times then hit the start button.
Sounds like your starter solenoid is not engaging. Try tapping it with a dead blow hammer or a hammer and block of wood (gently! Not to hard!) If it bumps over that is your problem. Also check all connections to solenoid and starter.
The whirring noise you are hearing is your starter motor but your bendix gear is not engaging.
