I thought the answer should be 3

I assume you mean (2x12)/4+10-6 as in your first post. I can understand how you got the wrong answer of 3 in that case but not as you wrote it here.

Multiplication and division get precedence over addition and subtraction.

First, evaluate the expression inside the parentheses: 2x12 is 24.
Then divide by 4 to get 6.
Add 10 to get 16.
Subtract 6 to get 10.

If you incorrectly do addition and subtraction before division then you divide 24 by 4+10-6 (which is 8) and get 3.

I dont understand why I keep getting the wrong exponet in trying to figure out 1500nm divided by 10^9. the answer I get is 1.5 *10^-7 -but the answer is 1.5*10^-6. What am I doing wrong?

Without knowing exactly what you're doing I can't be sure, but I suspect you're entering the 10^9 as something like 1 0 EE 9 .

1 0 EE 9 gives you 10 * 10^9, which is 10^10. You should be doing this as 1 5 0 0 / 1 EE 9 = .

HELP, I can't seem to figure out scientific notations with my Texas Instrument TI-30XA. I've searched for hours on the web. Here's the problem: 7.82 x 10^10 / 63.55 = 1.23 x 10^9. But when I input 7.82 x...

Hello,
The error comes from the lack of understanding of the meaning of the notation used by the calculator manufacturers.
The [EE] is a "shorthand" notation for times 10 to the power of .
To convince you of it try entering

1[EE]0 [=] this is 1*10^0=1*1=1
1[EE]1 [=] this is 1*10^1=1*10=10
1[EE]2 [=] this is 1*10^2=1*100=100

When you enter 7.82x10[EE]10
you are calculating
7.82*10*1*10^10=7.82x10^11.

Hope it helps.
