I need some more details to be able to help you. As OutBack Jack said, the OS is important. I would like to know why you can not access the drive normally. If we are talking about Windows and the drive is not recognized in My Computer, you can try with assigning a drive letter from Disk Management (if the drive is seen there). Try uninstalling drivers from Device Manager, restarting the PC and letting the drive to install the drives again. Check the latest firmware updates from the WD web page. Try the drive on another PC or with another cable.

have the files been deleted from the laptop? if not i would simply do a fresh format on the external and re migrate data. if they are then you can get software such as undelete or recover my files to restore your deleted data off of your laptop drive.
