Green display on boot up Please help

If you have password protected your User account on your Windows XP system and can't remember the password(s) to Login. Whenever Windows XP is installed on a system, it creates a default account called "Administrator" and by default this account is not password protected. Therefore, if you bought a brand name computer (such as Dell, HP, Compaq or Sony)or you have installed Windows XP yourself. You should be able to Login to the computer through the Admin account.

Method One

Reboot your machine.

Press F8 before the Windows boot screen appears. Do not press F5 as used on the NT/9x ser of Windows. You will be be prompted with a boot options menu.

Select the Start Windows in Safe Mode option.

Click through several self-explanatory screens until your reach the familiar 'Welcome' screen.

Note that this welcome screen is limited to 256 colors and 640x480 resolution because the primary graphics will have been set to the Windows Safe Mode software VGA adapter. You will not be able to change this mode even in Display options, while Windows is running in Safe Mode.

Find the icon for the Administrator user. If the default settings of your system haven't been changed, there should be no password for this account.

The Safe Mode Welcome screen might display some of the other users on your system.

Login as the admin.

Press Yes at the prompt asking if you would like to continue using Safe Mode.

Continue on to the User Settings control panel. Here you can change any of the other passwords for user on the machine. Make any changes you want.

Reboot your computer. As long as you don't press any keys (e.g. F8) during the boot-up the computer will startup normally.

Login as the user for which you set the password.

Question: Did it ever work? Is it only recovery from sleep? Will it boot normally if you unplug the computer while it is on (forced crash) and then restart. Will it boot in Safe mode? Getting stuck at the welcome screen indicates a driver not loading properly. Since the display does not work, likely the video drivers. Update with the newest driver from Nvidia for your system. Windows XP has had problems in the past with recovering from power management settings like hibernate and sleep.

Very common problem with Viewsonic and all other brands of failed moniotrs is due to bad caps as you can see here:

If repairing the XP installation is not solving your problem, you can try a clean install by formating your drive and re-installing XP.

If you are getting a Blue screen repeatedly and you can't start up towindows in any custom setting ( from f8 start up menu ) one way tosolve the problem is to Use the restore disc or windows installation cdor dvd to installwindows into the computer or perform a repair installation if a windowsalready exists on the computer and the setup can find it.

how to perform a repair installation

this is for xp, but its similar on 2000 and on vista.

insert your Windows XP Setup CD, and restart your computer.

1.Whenthe Press any key to boot from CD message is displayed on your screen,press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD.

ifnot then the computer is not set to start up from a cd, you can eitherenter the setup / bios to change that setting OR right when you powerup the computer look at the screen it will say what button to press inorder to enter boot menu or bios, it will very likely be button F12 or similar, it should say on the screen when you power on.

if it doesn't, then you need to go into the bios and change the boot order so that the computer starts from the CD first.

after that you should be able to start from the cd and install the OS (Operating system, eg.Windows)

2.Press ENTER when you see the message To setup Windows XP now, and then press ENTER displayed on the Welcome to Setup screen.

3.Do not choose the option to press R to use the Recovery Console.

4.In the Windows XP Licensing Agreement, press F8 to agree to the license agreement.

5.Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP is selected in the box, and then press R to repair Windows XP.

6.Follow the instructions on the screen to complete Setup.

7.Oneswindows is working you will need the drivers for your computer, theyare at the makers website, for hp and compaq. www.hp.com for acerhttp://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/downloads.html for all otherbrands go to google and write Brand drivers. Should get you to theright place. Dell is most likely www.dell.com and so on.

Hi there.
Turn on the computer and press the [F8] key during the POST procedure. this will take you to a sub menu where you can choose to boot into safe mode.
