Clean both the lens's contact and body's, if corrosion use nice emery paper.

SOURCE: autofocus function will not work on Canon 17 40mm 1.4 EF lens

Since the problem is limited to this lens, I highly doubt that you would have to replace the cameras AF sensors.
Since you only have the problem with this lens, I am afraid that you will have to get the lens repaired. Is the lens also 3 years old? Did you get it with MACK extended warranty?
Sometimes, Canon do these kinds of repairs for free, if they discover that there was some manufacturing error that caused it to fail. So be sure that you get it to a certified canon workshop.
I hope this helps,
/Chris

contact problem or lens diaphram blades problem. First try to clean the contact with the pencil eraser. If the problem isn't solved. send it to canon it should cost you about 100.00 to repar.

Canon Rebel XSi won't autofocus and makes grinding sound

There is nothing that auto-focuses except the circuit in the body - all the motors, gears etc. are in the lenses. If this is a 18-55 lens then more than likely the long shaft gear has broken teeth - a very common problem.

I am trying to use an older SIGMA 28 - 200 mm f3.5 - 5.6 UC Aspherical AF lens with a Canon Rebel Xsi and am getting a communication error (Err 01).I have already cleaned the lens contacts but still get...

From working with third party lenses in the past what I've found is that Canon doesn't give up the "chip" technology so the older lens can not talk to the newer cameras. I suspect that Canon does this to promote their lenses over the competition. You might be able to send the lens to Sigma and have them re-chip it and have a great lens again.

Autofocus not working

If you don't know how to fix it yourself send it to Sigma UK (01707 329999). They are quite resonable charges for that sort of fault. Their website give a price guide depending on lens and fault. Steve

Autofocus is stuck on Quantaray 28-200mm F3.8-5.6

NEVER open it up. You will destroy the dust seals. Have Canon repair it.

AF 70-300 causes error 99 in my Canon 300D

This is usually a torn flexible circuit or binding aperture in the lens. It'll have to go to a repair shop for replacement. About a $80 job.
