have you just changed over to dsl from standard modem when i had this problem it was because to fax out/in i needed a standard 56kb modem to do so as dsl does not go through the normal phone lines and cannot connect to standard phones which is what fax machines are on
SOURCE: Canon will not receive faxes or copy documents
see if you have fax line(conect a telefone in the line to see if you have tone) or if the cable is conected.

how do u fix the fax to fax and not go on auto redial
SOURCE: Every Fax we send has stripes going down it making
You say it makes copies without the stripes. Do you use the automatic document feeder (ADF) when you make copies, or open the top and lay the paper on the platen? If you get stripes when using the ADF, the ADF scanner area needs to be cleaned. It's the smaller glass area to the left of the main platen glass. Use a damp cloth and remove any dirt or debris.

It sounds like you need to adjust down the connection speed, and turn off error correction.
I'm not sure if it's the same as on the MF4270 I own, but on my machine you enter service menu by hitting "additional functions" followed by the pound sign. From there you can click through the options to find the transmit and receive speed options, and error correction mode option. The only real trick is entering service mode.
