You are getting the notification on your screen because your copy of Windows is less likely to be genuine and has failed the WGA validation process. Such notifications do not pop-up if a user is using a genuine copy of Windows. You are getting your desktop background as black screen because if a copy of Windows XP fails validation, the desktop background gets automatically changed to black screen. Even if you attempt to change it to a one of your choice, it will get automatically reset to black background every 60 minutes till the time your copy of Windows passes the validation process.

The only way to get rid of the notification and the black desktop background is to use a genuine copy of Windows. Thus, it is recommended to check if the copy of your Windows is genuine. If it is not, you need to buy a genuine one to resolve your issues. For more details, you can refer to the following Microsoft support link:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/905474

Once you have validated your copy of Windows, you can refer to the following webpage to change your desktop background:
(Important: Following link is of a third-party website. It is recommended to update your security software thoroughly before clicking on the link.)

Hope this will help you.

"You may be a victim

Welcome to FixYa!

If you're seeing notifications that the copy of Windows that is installed on your PC might not be genuine, or that you might be a victim of counterfeit software, it's likely that your copy of Windows was not properly activated or is otherwise not genuine. To fix this, click the notification and follow the steps to either repair Windows or-if you have inadvertently obtained counterfeit software-buy genuine Windows.

If you are using Windows XP, download and install the Windows Genuine Advantage Notification Application. It will scan your operating system and will remove the annoying message if it's a legitimate copy of windows.

Keep me posted.
Thank you for using FixYa.

I don't know who "Zylar" is, but I will try and help you with this problem anyway.

You are getting a message that you are a victim of software counterfeiting because your version of Windows XP Professional that is installed on your computer is not a valid, legal copy. Someone has installed boot leg software on your computer and it cannot be registerd as a legal copy for you. If you want to solve this problem, you need to buy a legal copy of windows xp and install it on your computer. When you removed the counterfeit copy the pop up messages will go away.

HI,

That message ("you may be a victim of software counterfeiting") is displayed when your Windows serial number is being used by someone else. If your copy of Windows is legitimate, try contacting Microsoft support.

Victim of software counterfeiting

This means the Windows Validation Tool has checked your installed copy of Windows and has found it to be a non-genuine copy. This means the product key is non valid.

Where did you get the PC? If a "friend" installed Windows for you then he is using illegal product keys.

If you are sure your Windows is genuine, you need to telephone Microsoft and fight it out with them.
