In Ubuntu 9.04 click on the main icon and select Restart.

- If Ubuntu is the only operating system on your computer you'll need to tap the ESC key as the system boots.

- If you have a
dual boot or multiple-boot system the menu should appear on its own.

- At the root level you'll get a boot menu. Select the one that says "recovery mode" and press Enter.

I forgot my password for my ibook

If you forgot your log in password (OS) you have 2 possible troubleshooting to resolve this.
- you would need a recovery disc to restore your computer or have the password reset.

- worst scenario is to re install the OS again.

I NEED HELP I FORGOT MY USERNAME PASSWORD AND I CANT LOG IN TO MY DELL LATTITUDE D600 LAPTOP

Incase you may have previously created a password recovery disc, then you can boot using that disc & recover or create a new Windows login password. However, I guess you may not have created a password recovery disc.
The other option is to reinstall Windows, but this would consume a lot of time & will incur data loss, incase you have not backed up data.
Hence, the best solution is as follows :-
For this solution, you will have to use another computer to download a free software from http://ophcrack.sourceforge.net/ , named ophcrack, is a free Windows password recovery tool : the best free Windows password recovery tool available.
You can find the complete steps through this link :-
http://www.lancelhoff.com/find-windows-login-password/
It also contains screenshots.
Follow all the steps and I am sure, you problem will be resolved.
There are other password recovery tools as well, see :-

Been reset to factory settings and need the password

You don't say what password you want. If it's windows password, in some versions of windows you can start the computer in safe mode by holding down the F8 key when starting the pc until it beeps. You can then log in as administrator without using any password and go to control panel to change the password. Failing this go to http://www.windows-password-recovery.net/password-recovery.php and download the windows password recovery program. Stellar Phoenix Password Recovery. It costs 49 dollars or 36 euros. It allows you to create a boot disc which you use to start the computer and displays all user passwords without entering windows and allows you to delete which ones you want so you can then shut down and restart without the boot disc and not need a password.

Lost password after reinstallation

There are a couple methods which you can try:

When the computer first boots Windows you can press F8 to access an advanced boot menu.

From there you can choose to boot the computer in "Safe Mode" which changes the system start-up mode.

There should be a hidden user that appears as "Administrator" that you can select...

(When Windows is installed for the first time there is an option for the "Administrator" password. This password is not required and is usually left blank. If you left the password field blank then clicking on user will log you in automatically. Otherwise, you're required to enter the original password you choose to protect the system.)

Log-in into windows as "Administrator" and create a new user in the control panel that you can log-in to the system normally with.

Restart the computer and log-in under the newly created profile to regain access to your system.

If you can't log-in under your user or the administrator profile because you forgot both passwords you will have to do an advanced recovery process, or wipe the system completely.

(Here is a link for a Linux Boot CD image, burn to a disc and boot to change the Administrator password in Windows XP/Media Center/Server 2003 Systems.)

If this doesn't work you can boot to an alternative recovery disk, Windows CD/DVD, partitioning software, or third party password recovery tool.

When all else fails, you can delete and create a new partition; then you would have to run the Windows setup again to recover your Operating System and drivers.

There are several types of password lock ups.
If you forgot the password on the log on screen where it asks for the username and password, you need to do recovery on the computer with the recovery disc that comes with it.

If the lock up is upon powering on the computer where you can see a blue screen and asks for a password, it is a BIOS power on password and there is no way to bypass this. You need to send it to an authorized service provider to reset it.

If it is an HDD password upon boot up, sad to say, the HDD needs to be replaced.

Hope this helps.
