1 or 2 capacitors on this motor?
Sometimes there are two...
One is a "Start" capacitor and if a 2nd one, that one is a "Run" capacitor.

If only 1 capacitor and you have replaced it... if not a faulty capacitor, then your windings are shot?

When I test a motor with this symptom, I will use the "Clock Face" method of checking for "Dead Spots" on the winding/stator:
Once you have removed the shaft cap on the back of the motor, I presume you have done this since that is only way to turn the shaft manually to get it to run in the manner you described. Place a small mark (1/4" long?) on the outside perimeter of the shaft, say at the 12:00 position. See picture attached...
Then flip switch, does it start or hum?
Then rotate shaft until your mark is now at the 1:00 position. Flip power switch, running or humming?
Do this at all clock positions as you turn/rotate shaft until you reach 12:00 once more. If the pump hums at all clock positions completely dead motor or bad capacitor. If a dead spot is at only one clock position, then absolutely, bad motor - either rebuild or replace.
Coincidentally the motor may stop each time on a dead spot, where the motor won't start due to a fried portion of the stator/winding/armature, only a major repair fixes this. The purpose of the test is to place the position of the stator in a different position in relation to the windings. If humming all the way around, then possibly a bad capacitor, because it is not starting in any position. If it starts say at all positions except 4:00 and 9:00 then motor is bad.

Good luck

SOURCE: The pump only hums when plugged in. Any suggestions?

It sounds like the impellor is locked. Take this part off and then see if the pump is turning but before you do, some of them have a big screw driver slot in the shaft. If it does, turn it to see if you can free the impellor. I have done this many times and they will continue to work for years after. They just get stuck from rust, etc. and also being frozen a little. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: I have a Hayward power

Jay, to be honest, with all the time your gonna spend searching and trouble shooting the pool is going to turn green and then your going to be stuck with bigger problems. The powerflo pump is a pretty inexpensive pump. Personally id just swap the pump and get it going so the pool stays clear.

Over the winter, tinker with the bad pump and see if you can fix it. If not, trash it. If you can fix it save it for a spare or sell it for 75$ on craigs list and make half your money back you spent on the new one.

When I turned my pump off to backwash and then turned it back on it made a humming noise then stopped running. Now it is doing nothing. what could the problem be?

sounds like a bad start capacitor, or there is something (rock, sand, or some debris) caught in the impeller.

The start capacitor not working will cause your motor to hum, then it will overheat and trip the high limit. It won't attempt to come back on until it has cooled. It's a common problem.

try clearing the impeller first, if that doesn't work and the motor shaft spins freely, then it's a capacitor.

I purchased a new 3/4hp Emerson pool pump installed it and the only thing it will do is hum.

OUT THE BACK SIDE OF THE MOTOR IS A SLOT IN THE SHAFT FOR A SCREWDRIVER , SEE IF YOU CAN TURN THE MOTOR OVER(BREAKER OFF !) YOU MAY HAVE BOUND THE IMPELLER OR IT COULD BE SET FOR 230 VOLTS AND YOU ARE RUNNING IT ON 115VOLT.....
IT MAY HAVE A BAD START CAP OR THE SWITCH MIGHT NEED CLEANING. THESE EMERSON MOTORS CAN BE HARD TO WORK ON DO TO THE HUGE AMOUNT OF PLASTIC PARTS

I have a clicking noise coming from the new Hayward super pump.

Is the motor running? It will make an audible 'click' when it turns on and another as it slows to a stop once shut off. If it keeps doing it during the run time, you are likely not feeding it the correct voltage. Otherwise, one click at the start and end is normal.

If the motor is set for the correct voltage and the line voltage is ok, the motor is starting to fail and will need service at a local electric motor repair shop.

Motor Hums,No Run

Inside the back case on the motor you'll see a white piece with two copper colored arms that have two silver points that almost touch. If these are rusty I've found that the motor won't turn over
. A quick fix is to take some 600+ grit Aluiminum oxide sandpaper and give each of those contact points a brisk sanding to remove any oxidation. This will help the points make a positive contact . Make sure while very obvious that the motor is unplugged first.
