Hi Mark
Perhaps a bit late now.... Just spotted this so I imagine it's all fixed by now.
But for others with this sort of problem.
Assuming the pull cord is not broken, stuck or tangled. Switch off or short plug to ground, for safety then remove the spark plug to allow the engine compression to escape. You should be able to turn the engine over really easy with the pull rope, otherwise the engine might be seized or the rotary pull mechanism jammed.
Also... can the shaft to the string line be rotated as in the crankshaft of the engine.
Good Luck

Toro 51978 weed eater can't pull the cord?

It is a two stroke motor. Have you been running it at the recommended gas / oil mix?

The pull cord should pull easily when unbolted from the trimmer engine.

Remove the spark plug. Add a dessert spoon of light machine oil like 3 in One and let it sit overnight with the piston and cylinder perfectly upright. The next day, turn the crankshaft three full revolutions with a wrench. Tip out any excess oil and refit the spark plug and pull starter.

The pull cord to crank up the weed eater is not pulling out.

You can try replacing the cord with new, failing that if the cord is sticking on starting, and releasing the cord, you will need a new starter clutch, you should check with your servicing agent first before commencing work,as sometimes these are not worth repairing, rgds

It wont start

First, make sure that the gas mixture is correct (gas and oil mixed in the right proportion). Next, press the primer bulb 3-4 times, turn the choke lever on to Full Choke, and pull the starter cord until the engine seems like to wants to start, but dies. Next, switch the choke lever to Half Choke and start the gas trimmer, giving it gas by pulling on the trigger. Once it has warmed up fully, you may be able to reduce the Half Choke to No Choke, although my 20+ years of experience with dozens and dozens of models tells me that many trimmers run better, although smoking slightly, when you keep them at Half Choke. One last tip, when pulling the cord, try pushing the trimmer away from you with the opposite hand at the exact same time that you are pulling the starter cord--the equal and opposite push-pull technique may sound like something from karate (and it is, in a way), but it is really helpful when trying to start trimmers. Best of luck, Bill

PS: Check you owner's manual (at home or online) for the proper gas/oil mixture. Empty any old gas out and replace the spark plug, if required.

Pull cord won't pull

Check the shaft to see if there is something stuck in there. You can pull the wire shaft out to check. It is wire but looks like a small cable. Good luck...Lee

Starter pull cord

take a light and look into the clutch hole
you will either need a torx or star type nut driver or a allen or hex head nut driver to fit in the hole and turn the screw ccw while holding the flywheel.
Make note where all comes off and all goes back in reverse when fixed.also after you remove the clutch housing you will be stareing at the clutch shoes next and it will have markings on which way to turn it for removal.

Ryobi Line trimmer

you have to remove the starter housing, inside will be 2 knobs that spring out when the cord is pulled that contact the flywheel cap of the motor and rotates the crank. check if they are missing or damaged and that they ejecting when the cord is pulled. if not; replace.
