the main tube is clogged.
unplug it, open bag area, remove bag look for clog.
if clear, take off lower coller, pull up tube, remove blockage, either in tube or fan area.
if clear, look in bottom by intake area for blockage.
fan can not run backwards.

Its clogged. It needs to have a thorough clean out and this can be done by removing the sole plate / floor head where the beater bar is and checking to see that all the air ways or the dust channel that flows through t he main spine neck at the back is clear, checking the main spine at the back is clear and finally to check that there is no clogging at the top of the back spine as well. Oreck XL can become clogged quite quickly due to its relatively small suction tube openings and small motor.

this bent metal wire goes right at the surface in a grove where the two pieces of the handle go together where your fingers grip it. I think it is to discharge static electricity.
