Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ...
Here's some things that you can do to try to correct it. They only seem to work for less than 50% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try:

I had the same problem, tried different things but this is what worked.
I put the camera flat on its "back" (screen down, lens up). Looking down at the lens I could see that it was slightly off center. I pushed the lens towards the center and down, forcing it to close. Once it was centered I was able to turn it on and off no problem.

Hi there,
Your problem is common to that model and actually to most of camera models. Usually it has foreign materials interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. It's also possible that the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension which eventually damaged gears or other parts. You should also check if your battery has enough power to supply the lens mechanism, easy way to find out is to use a new charged or brand new battery.
If you are still under warranty, I suggest to bring you camera to the store or service center. If not then here are some things that you can do to try to correct it. I hope it will work for you.

my camera was doing the same thing! it would say lens error and the lens wouldnt go back in the camera. so i started to read up online and a lot of websites said to basically just beat the **** out of your camera. at first i was hesitant to doing so because i was afraid my camera would brake or much more worse problems would happen... well i started to get really frustrated bc i havent been able to use my camera for months and i wasnt planning on spending money on a new one or getting this one fixed. so i just started slamming my camera on the computer table and before i knew it turned on! if i knew thats what i had to do for months then i would have probably thrown it at the wall or something but now its works so try abusing it xD haha!
