Wanting to know if it possiable to connect Direct TV to this monitor if it is possiable where would I be able to find the instruction for connecting cables
Your HP 1740 Monitor uses:
as for your DirectTV box you have at least an RCA and a HDMI to connect to Display devices that "DOES'NT MATCH" with your preferred monitor.
Your only chance to make it happen is to get a HDMI to DVI adapter (like this one: http://images.thomann.de/pics/prod/249861.jpg ) to output your digital box to your monitor.

Using the original remote for the TV open the setup menu and select SVGA connection for IMPUT every time you use the tv as monitor i hope this solve the problem.
