AO Smith 3/4 HP pool pump: Turns on, but within 20 seconds shuts off and there's a burning smell. Sounds like the impeller is stopping, but then I don't know what I'm talking about. The sound changes from normal to a quiet hum, then shuts off.

check the breaker might be weak possibly from previous pump motor also if it was hooked up incorrectly at first might have done damage to motor windings
Make sure the main pump is running while the booster is and make sure there is no air in the lines. You may have to open the pump to see if any debris has gotten into the impeller.
You'll need information from the pump that the AOSmith electric motor is attached to in order to get an impeller or any other pump parts. If there is no nameplate for the pump are there numbers on the impeller you need?
SOUNDS LIKE YOU GOT THE WRONG IMPELLER, THE ONE YOU GOT IS FOR A BIGGER MOTOR.. THESE IMPELLERS CAN BE A PAIN TO ID, OR EVEN FIND .. TRY THE IMPELLER FOR A 1HP. I BET IT WILL WORK JUST FINE .. JAY THE POOL PUMP REPAIR GUY IN LONGWOOD FL ..
Remove the back of the motor ... you will find there are flats on the shaft. Put your 7/16 or 1/2 open end wrench there and with your other hand, spin off the broken impeller.
the pump must not have any air leaks in the suction side of it,, or it will just **** air and not water,,, water is very heavy you see, however i think its the impeller in the pump thats the problem,,,you should try to put water in the out let of the pump so you fill the pump with water first if its dryed out it may just wear out the impeller before it starts to **** water up, if this still dont work turn off the stop **** and strip out the pump to look at the impeller any wear on it and it will need a new one fitted
i hope this has help you, good luck
you are clogging your impeller take a wet vac put hose your using for pump in pool put vac on end of hose to woods and turn on vac long enough to get a water flow and shut of vac it is slower but will save pump
