Does this problem happen when scanning either from the scanner glass or the automatic document feeder? Does this problem happen when scanning either from the computer using the Lexmark software or scanning using the Scan button on the printer operator panel? This will help me understand what might be causing this problem.

I right click on the scanned document to get the "picture toolbar"/select "picture control"/uncheck "automatic" and check "black & white"/print. Then can scan
place the picture on the glass........open HP solution center.......click on scan picture......it will dispaly the preview of the picture....select scan to photosmart essential........click on accept.....it will scan the picture and open in photosmart Essential.
1. To load a picture, lift the lid and place the original face down on the left front corner of the glass, with the sides of the picture touching the left and bottom edges.
2. Close the lid
Scanning a text document
Load the original.
From the HP Director , click Scan Document .
From the HP Scanning dialog box, select the desired options and Scan to destination.
A preview of the image will appear in the HP Scan window.
Make any edits from the HP Scan window and click Accept .
Click Scan .
The document will open in the selected Scan to destination.
Scanning a picture
Load the original.
From the HP Director , click Scan Picture .
A preview of the image will appear in the HP Scan window.
Make any edits from the HP Scan window and click Accept .
The HP PSC sends the scan to the HP Photo & Imaging Gallery , which automatically opens and displays the image.
The HP Photo & Imaging Gallery has many tools to edit the scanned image. For more information about using the HP Photo & Imaging Gallery , see the onscreen help that came with the software.
Stopping a scan
To stop scanning, press Cancel on the front panel.

ok" what you have to do is a pre-scan, in the pre-scan menu click on the your picture hold button down and drag a box will apear around the picture telling the computer what part of the picture you want scaned by draging that box.
