Brute force might burst the mounting points. Unbolt one strut at one end and try to close the box. Refit the strut and do the same for the other side. This will tell you if it is one or both struts causing the problem.
They aren't very expensive and there are plenty of websites where you can get replacements. Check the struts for serial numbers, you might even be able to replace them just based on their measured length.
