You either didn't get it back together correctly or you will need a new pressure regulator.

SOURCE: Makita MAC5200 Compressor. Leaks

There are two types of regulators used. One has a rubber diaphram sealed at perimeter with body and a piston type. Most likely you have the piston type. Remove body containing piston/ spring mech. Examine piston lip seal. Lip will face toward body of reg. and must fit snugly into cylinder. Make sure cylinder is smooth and is well lubed.
If seal/piston fits loose remove seal and wrap some teflon tape in groove and re-install lip seal /test for snug fit. Notice small metal actuator extending from center of reg. , if it is circular (about 1/8 dia) then there should be an oring of the same size mated/fit into the piston. If this oring is missing it will leak as you describe. Lastly, there should be a gasket or oring sealing outer shell to body. If you have diaphragm type look for holes, tear or shrink too small. Parts are at www.toolpartsdirect.com or Lowes in the plumbing department good place for orings and silicone lube. Good luck

SOURCE: Craftsman Air Compressor 919.156640 -- Today, when

You could give it a try you don't have anything to loose and you might be able to clean it and thats what it sounds like. But you can redo bolth of the regulators with new ones get rid of the plastic cover and they thread on a pipe that comes out of the air system. You could get two new gauges and a manifold body for 50 dollars at a place that sells auto paint supplys or spray equipment. If the compresser still works good its worth it you just have to do a little retro fitting these parts tend to be vary standard its your call good luck

Testimonial: "Thanks. If I can't get it to work by my attempt at cleaning, I'll certainly follow your advice."

How to replace regulator on husky air scout model 41004

On my air scout the regulator cap, which is threaded to receive the bolt attached to the regulator knob was stripped. It's cheapo metal. I removed that and the knob (which is held onto the bolt with a smaller reverse-threaded screw, and replaced the cap using a larger diameter bolt I place of the knob. Works.

Compressor runs and sounds ok, but it only manages to show 20 lbs. It will not build air pressure and continues to run.

check air tank drain valve located on bottom of tank, if it is not leaking try adjusting air pres regulator (large black knob close to air hose connection.) the knob when turned in will increase the tank air pressure, if knob wont turn check that lock ring on bottom of knob to make sure it is disengaged. also check for air leaks in all lines and connections

This is a brand new compressor that I have kept in a box for about six years. It was never used. I open the box and took the compressor out of the box. The regulator fell out of the compressor. I have...

Look at the underneath side of the knob. Many of these have a square molded into the knob that fits over the square shaped adjusting stem coming out of the regulator. The replacement regulator (if you end up having to replace it) is part #885807 (reference number 30) and is $42.88 Here is the link to the parts breakdown.

The knob for the air pressure regulator is broken. what should I do?

You can get a new knob sears it vary good about parts lists as long as the steam for the regulator it good. Or you could ever retrofix with something that fits and you can turn the valve with as long as it works it dosen't matter what the knob looks like.

I have an older Craftsman Air Compressor and the knob valve to reg the pressure seems to not be working. Can I replace it?

It is getting increasingly more difficult to obtain replacement parts for older compressors. If your regulator failed at a fairly high pressure adjustment, say around 100-120 lbs, you could just leave the old regulator in place and add a regulator when needed to one of the quick connects. Purchase a generic pressure regulator from Lowes and add quick fittings to easily connect the regulator or remove when not needed. You could also just remove the old regulator and work-in a new generic regulator in its place. Generic regulators sell for $20 - $40. Good luck with your repair.

Will only produec 20lb of pressure

I have the same make/model. Connect a device to your air line (impact, blow gun, doesn't matter anything that will use air). Operate the device and note if the pressure on your output gauge falls, and then rises back to 20# when you let off of the device. If it does, this indicates that your regulator is either defective, or it is adjusted too low. Try adjusting the regulator knob, operating it in both directions, and note the pressure on the output gauge. If you can get it to rise, you're home free!
