My new kenmore freezer will not shut off when set at zero unless i open the door. please explain

You have a Kenmore upright, which you set on ZERO? WHY?
Every time you open the door all of the cold air falls out and it has to start over in the cool down cycle, the fan stops to NOT push all of the COLD out while the door is open - you should consult a professional. Not for the freezer, for your ability to understand.

It sounds like you have a circulation problem.
Spread out the packages so the freezing air can circulate.

  • Check that the condenser fan is on
  • Check that the coils are not covered with lint and dust especially if they are under the freezer.
  • you may need a tech to put freon in the system.

There is frost in the freezer. I thought it was frostless.
If you live in a humid environment its the water vapor in the air that is turning to frost in your freezer. Every time you open the door you are exchanging the cold dry air in your freezer for the humid air on the outside, and when you shut the door closed its this humid air that turns to frost inside the freezer. If its building up frost faster than normal you might have a door gasket that is leaking the cold air outside thus letting the humid air in, which is turning to frost. Check that your door is aligned properly and that the gasket is secure on the freezer door.
