Hi. Make sure the flywheel turns freely and that the capstan pin and pressure roller are clean. If this is OK then it is more than likely that the belt is stretched, dried out or generally worn. These parts only have a certain usable life and are quite cheap to replace.
i have a sony stack system i had put away for a couple of years, i have now put it back together, but when i wire both speakers up, the sound go s to a point then cuts out, whith a mesage on the front saying protect, it i take one speaker off! nothing happens, can any one help please? thak you for your time.

Doiuble check your wiresa again for no pinches or shorts, even at the back of the unit. Also try unplugging the unit for 12 to 24 hours. If that does not help, it may be the time to buy a new stereo because that means there is a fault in the output device, unless you kinow someone who can trouble shoot and repair solid state electronics.
