Hi Could be bad spin motor, but the first thing to try is load the cd and put your ear to the unit and listen for a ticking sound...if there is, then the laser is trying to focus. If not ticking, there is likely a serious problem, and the whole unit should be replaced. If you hear the lense bouncing up and down, then it is likely a dirty lense or bad laser. To clean it, use a cotton swab and wet the end with at least 70% USP rubbing alchohol(99% better). Touch the swab to the lense and a drop should form on the lense, gently move the drop around to loosen any debris, and then use a dry swab and touch it to the lense to absorb the drop. Try the unit, and if it was dirt on the lense, it should work, if not the boombox should probably be replaced. Good Luck!

sounds like the stop button is getting a crossover signal
the CD player ALWAYS has vibration... (impossible to make a perfect balanced spinning mechanism...) and this could allow a slight vibration to affect the machine... age making it more prominent and thus the delay in occurance
but more likely the Capacitor has gone bad (13 years is a very good life for the small charge holders) allowing the voltage to go where it isn't supposed to go
assuming you are a DIY guy then trace the path for the stop button and check the capacitors and resistors in the area
usually a connection is make or break but it could have a signal pull resistor with a capacitor to stop direct current.. if so, that is the first capacitor to check... also good news in this case... the capacitor that fits with a pull up/down switch isn't very critical in it's specs so a close match should be fine

First place to start is making sure that the lense is clean

The laser is dead or damaged. Try swabbing the laser with rubbing alcohol on a Q-Tip, then IMMEDIATELY blowing dry with canned air. If this fails, the laser is dead. If it is a Sony KSS-2xx series laser (try to peek in the laser slot to see the decal on it) you can get replacements online. If not, it's junk.

Might be the laser but try lubbing the spindle motor 1st!
