Could be many issues. Take a flashlight and hold it right against the screen. Can you see a picture? if so the lcd is working but the backlights are not. If that is the case you could have bad power supply caps on the 24 volt section, a bad inverter board, or a bad ccfl lamp itself inside the back of the screen

I Have a 40" Element LCD when i power on the TV and I have sound but no picture. If you power on the TV in the dark you very faintly can see the Element picture on the screen for a couple second's.
Probable bad board, solder joints known to fail.

Hi Vee Jay,
No picture just sound means you are not able to see the picture because there is no back light. Inverter board is the culprit in most cases.

1996 mitsubishi 40" tv has a black screen and
no pic at all usiually means the the heater element in the picture tube it self is burned out. Also there could be a problem with the internal power supply that gives electricity to the heater element. These are all thing the cunsumer cant fix. You either need to trust ONLY a certified Mitsubishi TV repair man, or replace the TV.
I know it's not great news, but if this advice helps, please give me a good rating.
