Hi, it's Allie from Crucial Vacuum.
Other than the battery being defective, this problem may be caused by a blockage or a dirty filter. If after checking your unit for blockages it still having the same issue, you may need to wash your filter.
Ideally, washable filters should be washed after every 3-4 uses. First, remove the dust from your washable filter. As it may spread around the air, it is best to do this outside. Tap the filter gently to get rid of most of the dust. With lukewarm running water, rinse the outside surface of the filter, without using any soap. Allow the filter to air dry between 24 to 48 hours before you replace it in your vacuum. Once the filter is clean and dry, place it back into your unit and turn it on.
To minimize the waiting time for the filter to be completely dry for it to be used again, it is highly recommended to have a spare filter to use while you clean the one in your hand held vacuum.

SOURCE: Dyson DC17 - the vacuum shuts off automatically
I had the same issue. Got on the phone with Dyson. THe vacuum has a safety feature where if the motor gets too hot it cuts off. You have to leave it for 45 minutes or so and then it will work again. There is an underlying issue though. My problem was the black gasket thats in the debris bin shifted, probably from when emptying i pushed it on something. The black gasket should actually hang off the bottom like a skirt and the 2 groves should fit in on the groves of the gray mechanism. This seal is what provides 100% suction. Because of this..my vaccumm has been accumulating pet hair by the belt which i hear alot of people talking about and especially in the filter area. This is because I broke the seal by not having the gasket in place properly and it wasnt sucking 100%. They are sending me a complete new cyclone unit which has the debris catcher as well as she said its probably so caked up with debris it will never work again 100%. no questions asked they are sending it to me free of charge.
So if you remove the clear cyclinder debris catch thing all you will have is the purple cyclone on top and on the bottom is the black rubber gasket....if that shifted and is no longer hanging off...call dyson cause your vacuum is probably caked up...it will never work properly...they will send you a new part
SOURCE: I have a dyson hand held that shuts off after just
yeap..... i just found a fix for this ,, its mad how easy it is to fix as well...and it works 100%,,,
now dyson implemented a filter magnetic switch if u take your filter off you will see a small magnet in the corner,, u will notice where the magnet is behind it is rased platic,, now,,that the problem on the main board the transistor that picks up magentic signal from the filter is dud,!
dont ask me why it happens,, its a pain i know.,.
now take off collection pot for dust now take battery off.
now where the serial number is theres 2 hex screws that need taking out..
now u will see a small pcb board.. remove with one tiny security screw holding it in,, once removed pull both red plug off thats the digital motor plug.. and white plug which is vcc..to battery,, once u have done this pull the board down and back gently. as there is a long bit of board that goes up the back of the dyson plastic be very carefull pull this out.. now the long and thin pcb board that is hidden is what we need there is a tiny transistor,,, we need to remove this carefully..once removed,, we solder a thin wire from 2 point A+C need to be soldered together with a thin piece of wire, it will not harm the motor.. as long as u keep it clean,,
these points corolate to the transistor,,
A
B C
SOLDER AND A+C WITH A FINE PIECE OF WIRE NOW,, AND WALLAH... fixed put it all back together again,,, charge the battery,, and your away,,, working again,, if not u have other faults.. but 99% fix this with flashing red led,,,!!
SOURCE: My hand held Dyson vacuum will not charge. Every
My same symptoms are - after starting charge, Red light is on, then second light turns On. Then for a long time nothing happens. And later I have all three LED flashing.
I replaced battery and nothing changed.
Imeasured Power Supply voltage and found it 24.2v instead 28v as it stated on the label.
I opened it up and found that the three-lid chip marked 431 is faulty.
431 is a voltage shunt, which sets and controls output voltage.
You can use AIC431CUS or TL432 (TL431 has different pinout).
I replaced mine and volatge back to 28.25v and charger is now working as it should.
You can also use any TO-92 431 chip - there is enough room for it.
Good luck!
