This model uses VHS-C (VHS compact) tapes. You can still get them on Amazon.

I have Aiwa CX-NA508. Tape player 1 just ate my cassette and the 2nd tape player doesn't play at all.. Is the 2nd player supposed to play back cassette tapes or is it just for dubbing tapes?

Both players should play a tape. In fact the player can be set up so when tape player 1 finishes the tape, player 2 will kick on to play the other tape by itself. Only one is the recorder to dub another tape or record CD to tape.

Not all cd tapes play clearly out of 12 tapes ,4 sound ok ,8 soundwrak

Are these all commercial pre-recorded tapes? Or are they tapes that were recorded at home? Is the tape deck one that the tape loads in from the short side and must be flipped around to play the other side....or is it one that the tape loads in with the tape facing in and is auto-reversing? Pre-recorded commercial tapes should work on most machines without problems. Home recorded tapes can be a problem, especially on the type of deck that the tape must be swapped over to play the reverse side. Many users use C90 or C120 tapes to home record. These tapes are thinner than normal tapes and are prone to getting overly tight and then can break and/or stretch. This causes jamming in the deck and distortion of the playback.

We are having an issue with our backups. The system event log says there is an error 7 and lists the tape drive as having a bad block. However the quantum diagnostic tool shows the drive to be healthy. ...

Event ID-7 is a "Bad Block" on the Tape being using. By design, when a Bad Block is encounter, the Tape Drive "Seizes the Tape" and goes offline. It can sometimes be difficult to get the Tape Drive to release the Tape. Refer to the Users Manual for instrcutions on how to Reset the Tape Drive. Sometimes applying the Firmware Update willl reset the Tape Drive and Eject the Tape.

Do not assume the Tape is Bad, but do not re-use until tested. The Tape may be Bad, the Tape Drive may simply need Cleaning or the Tape Drive may be Worn or Damaged. If you are using 3rd Party Backup Software, such as Backup Exec or Yosemite, you wan want to check the Removable Storage Servcie to see if it is set to Manual or Automatic. Any Tape Devices would need to be first Deleted in the Library Section of Removable Storage, then Sop and Disable Removable Storage. Since Removable Storage is in effect NTBACKUP, this Service can interfere with the Operation of your Backup Software and generate "Bad Block" Errors.

To Test the Tape with your Quantum Tape Drive, use a tool called XTALK ( xTalk-6.4.1.1_Quantum_Setup.exe ) that is found on Quantums Website http://www.quantum.com/ServiceandSupport/Index.aspx

You may run a write_read_full Test on the Tape. Be sure to Clean the Tape Drive first. If it fails the Tape, try it with a 2nd Tape, If it fails again, suspect the Tape Drive.

I have a VHS tape that had the tape severed can I use regular scotch tape to repair?

Yes, but to minimize the possibility of tape head damage tape on the inside of the damaged tape (that is the side facing the cassete not the outward facing side) and trim the scotch tape slightly smaller then the tape so no scotch tape is exposed - note you still run the risk of head damage but I've done it many times b4 with no problem

Malfunctioning tape recorder or bad tape?

How old are the tapes? Unless the tape recorder doesn't shut off when it gets to the end of the tape, then I think the tape recorder is fine and it is probably just the tape.
Hope this helps.
Good luck.

Just connect you EQ to your receiver as if it were a tape deck: EQ's outs connect to receiver's tape ins (play) and EQ's ins connect to receiver's tape outs (record).

Then you hook the tape deck up to the tape ins and outs on the EQ: Tape deck outs connect to EQ's tape ins (play) and tape deck ins connect to EQ's tape outs (record).

This will put the EQ in your receiver's tape loop. To hear the EQed signal with all receiver sources you'll need to engage the 'Tape Monitor' button or switch which will route the tape loop to the speakers.
