The answer may be the blade breaks on the mower deck. If you have completely reassembled the mower deck assembly to include the pulleys make sure the breaks are in the correct position or they will bind and lock the blades. If you have bolted on the mandrels and pulleys only and the blades will not turn you may have left the pulley spacer off. This has to be on the pulley end of the mandral to prevent contact between the pulley and fixed portion of the mandral. A quick test would be to losen your pulley bolt to see if this frees your blades. Good luck with your issue.

Okay check see if brakes is on the mower, not the tractor but the blades of the mower deck if not then take belt off of the new mandrel side and try turning blade by hand. should turn freely if not mandrel is bad but unlikely. sounds like you changed wrong side mandrel I presume you have 2 blades and mandrels. or when you installed it back on. the belt may be bound up between a guide and pulley just kind of look things over before a tear apart. and then do your tear apart one step at a time then check blade to see if it turns does not seem serious you may have put belt on wrong, I have done it my self. hope this helps major note do not do this with engine running cut you hand off in a flash.

I think that I over tightened the lock nut on one side (not using a tort wrench) after changing the mowing blades. I don't think it is cutting now. When I take the blades off from cutting, one blade...

there is a star shaped, or other, pattern on the bottom of the mandrel which fixes it into the blade. this has stripped so the blade is freewheeling on the mandrel. if you cannot remove the blade bolt, I think you are going to have to remove the deck and take it to a fabrication or machine shop to have them remove the blade from the mandrel. then you buy a new mandrel and a new blade, at a small engine repair shop, put it back together. take a picture of the top of the deck before you remove the deck belt so you know how to put it back on after you have the new mandrel bolted in. if it is old you may just want to replace all the mandrels while you are at it. they are less than 50 bucks each.

When I engage the deck to start cutting a loud noise begins and the tractor does not work. I previously hit a tree root with it's blades engaged. Can you please help? Thanks Danny

Sounds to me like you bent a spindle. Turn the mower off and get under it and see if you can spin the blades. The blades whould spin and not be wobbly. If either one of the blades are wobbly then you'll need to replace the spindle.

Also check to make the blade belt hasn't come off or is not destroyed.

Good luck!

Craftsman 42", 18.5 lawn tractor: blades are hitting in the mower deck. Blades are new and deck is balanced. Is it wear on the Mandrel - Shaft? Mandrel bearing?

Oh boy!!! Welcome to the craftsman worst design of their mower decks CHEAP!!!!! I had to replace my mandrel on the right side, side where the grass shoots out several times!! Cheap aluminum casting ****, one or more of your ears on the mandrel probably snapped, if you have an air wrench they are not too bad to replace, the screws that go into the mandrel are self threading and is easier to work on with air wrench but can be done with socket set, hope this helps!!!! good luck!

One blade cuts and one doesn't. Is this a pulley or a belt problem?drive belt sound hasn't changed. can belts be adjusted or only replaced? what tools are needed?

Set the thing up on some blocks and try to remove the blade which does not turn. Since your belt is working, the pulley must be spinning or there would briefly be an awful racket. If the pulley is spinning but the blade is not then there is something wrong with the mandrel/spindle, or the blade has come loose and has somehow not cut off anyone's foot. Sometimes the pulley and top of the mandrel become rounded out but again there would be some metal on metal noise. Often there is a star shaped protrusion on the bottom of the mandrel which locks into the blade and by virtue of hitting some immovable object, that unstoppable keeper has been destroyed.

When I replaced Blades Theirs a star shaped shaft that the blades slide on before you place bolt on. I noticed the star shaped shaft is rounded off. How do I repair this? THANKS!

I think you must replace the entire mandrel. Small engine repair shops carry them, expect about $40.00. Drop the deck, take off the blade drive belt, remove 3 bolts, your blade is already off, take mandrel out and install new one in reverse order.

Cutting blade barring ***

I think that part is called a mandrel, pulley on top and blade on the bottom.
Generally you remove the deck, take off the deck belt, take off the covers, take off the blade, remove the bolts holding the mandrel to the deck. Get a new mandrel at a sears store or small engine repair shop and reassemble in reverse order. May want to do them all while you are at it and save yourself duplication of work next year.

Blades making a bad noise

Well I would say you have a bent blade, a blade has a loose connection to the bottom of the mandrel, or a mandrel bearing is going out. Visual inspection will reveal much, just look under the deck. A bad mandrel may appear to have "runout" when viewed from the top while spinning as contrasted with a good mandrel. Viewing the one in the center while deck is working is going to be a challenge. If you decide to replace a mandrel, do yourself a favor and take a picture of the deck belt before you take it off so you know how it goes back on.

Mower squeeking - mowing as usual, and it's squeeking, checked oil, it has oil in it, what else should I check, mower 1 year old, I've done minimal maintenance on it. and can't find my owners manual.

Does it squeek when at an idle, or when driving, or cutting? Does it cut fine? I would check the belts and pulleys and blades for extra play. I had a mandrel bearing go bad on my ys4500 (also about a year old) and the first symptom was a squeeling sound when the blades were enguaged. Play in the mandrel caused the belt to squeek at the pulley that turns the blade. It also cut some nice gouges in my yard due to a floppy blade. I hope that this helps, I got the answers to my problem here on fixya.com.

I believe that one can find a downloadable .pdf version of the owners manual with a quick google search.

good luck
