Assuming the pilot is working normally, when you turn the thermostat up past the current temperature of the oil, you should hear and feel a tiny click in the thermostat. If not, the thermostat is defective. If there is a click, a weak thermopile is occasionally to blame. Sometimes further heating the thermopile with a propane torch will cause the main burners to kick on. If replacing the thermopile does not solve the problem, you have a defective gas valve.
