Rope ***** around shaft - Sea-Doo US 2004 GTX 4-TEC

The recoil starter can usually be unbolted from the engine for service. If you can retrieve the end of the broken rope, and you know how long the new rope should be, you can tape or stitch the new rope to the end of the old rope, then pull on the knotted end of the old rope to pull it out of the starter and draw the new one in. If this won't work (the old rope may be too rotted to hold together, or the pull force to wind the rope around in the starter is too much), you'll have to take the starter apart. This is nasty because you have to get the spring properly engaged with the frame and the starter plate when you put it back together, and there may be an element of personal hazard if there is tension on the spring. You may want to have the starter plate on the bottom when you lift off the cover, hopefully this will prevent everything from spilling out before you get a chance to see how it goes together. Wear safety glasses and leather gloves. Wearing a padded jacket or heavy-duty shop apron may also be a good idea.

Check whether the handle on the new rope requires the rope to be fed through its opening in the starter, and be sure it goes it is wound in the same direction as the original rope. Also, you want just enough tension on the spring to hold the rope handle up against the starter without flopping around, but not so much that the spring winds up too tight before you get to the stop with the rope pulled all the way out.

You may wish to take the starter unit to a small engine shop and pay them to wind on a new rope. :)

These are the considerations I've observed when looking over recoil starters - someone may have more detailed information on your model.

Finally, evaluate the storage conditions for the generator. A good rope should last a long time; perhaps excessive humidity, chemical fumes or exposure to UV radiation rotted out the rope. Did you put oil in the cylinder per the long-term storage instructions (Page 14 of the manual)? If not, that could result in excessive pull force. You may be able to free up the generator by removing the spark plug, putting a small amount of lightweight oil, turning over the generator using the starter spline shaft (be careful not to damage the shaft with tools, and observe which direction it's supposed to rotate when the recoil starter lets go), Change the oil if you have to use something lighter than recommended to get sticky parts loosened.

There is a shroud that the rope goes into and under that shroud is a pulley the rope coils around. Take the shroud off by removing the bolts and screws, Pull it away from the engine, it should slide off the flywheel/crank shaft. When you have it removed, there are tabs that hold the pulley in, you have to bend those back and take the pulley out. Be advised that there is a very long, flat coiled spring that causes the pulley to rewind the cord. This spring is hard to deal with and can uncoil rapidly and cause serious injury. When you have the pulley out and uncoiled the spring, you can change the rope, make sure you thread it through the housing first and then into the pulley and knot the end. Reassembly is troublesome because getting the spring and pulley the right tension to retract the rope is not easy. Check youtube for how to videos.

Could be a couple things, try turning the blade by hand to see if it will turn fairly easy. If it doesn't check around the blade base to see if something is wedging around the shaft like weeds or a piece of wire or rope or something. If there's nothing there check the belt maybe the idler has a frozen bearing [if it's got one] or maybe the belt jumped off and is wedged in there around the shaft. good luck

Probably bent the shaft. Disconnect the spark plug to prevent accidental starting and lay the lawn mower on its side. Slowly turn the blade with your hand and watch the center of the shaft. If it wobbles at all it is bent. $150 to $200 job. Probably time for a new mower.

Pull the rope out 3/4 of its full travel, hold the pulley in place with your one hand while wrapping the rope around the pulley another turn. repeat this as needed to achieve the proper tension. take care not to run out of spring travel before rope.

Drain oil from mower until proper level. Remove spark plug and pull starter rope several times to blow out cylinder. Spray starter fluid in cylinder pull rope several times to clean out. Replace fouled plug with new spark plug. Remove air cleaner, ensure no oil present, replace filter as needed. Clean air filter box with carb cleaner. Install new air filter reattach filter cover. Prime engine, pull starter rope 1/2 way 4 times to help prime, then pull starter rope fully up to 10 times to start.

Unless the recoil spring is broken, then you may have neglected to pre-load the recoil spring. With the recoil unit off of the motor, wind the rope fully around the pulley. Then, while keeping the rope fully wound, turn the pulley about 5 times around in the direction that would push the hope out through the hole. At this point the recoil spring will be trying to spin. Without losing that tension, push the end of the rope out through the hole, thereby putting a bit more tension on the recoil spring. Tie on the handle. Now, when you let go of the rope, the spring should hold the handle snug against the hole. An alternative method is to use a rope about 2 to 3 feet longer than the original. Wind it fully around the spool and put the end of it through the hole. Now pull the extra length through the hole until the tension is sufficient. Cut off the extra length and tie on the handle.

If you have the starter spool out (the one the rope goes in)...Here is what to do. Take the starter spool and change the rope out putting it back exactly as it was. Leave the rope hanging. Hold the spool and set it down on the rewind spring. Turn the spool on the rewind spring until you feel it is tight enough. While turning, hold the rope in the little slot in the spool so it can go around without hanging up. Once it is tight, get the rope in line with the spool opening and SLOWLY let the rope rewind. Put on the handle and put the unit back together.Good luck...Lee

If you are achieving proper max RPM but not achieving peak MPH, the prop is cavatating. That means it is aerating the water around the impeller. The most common cause of this is debris (rope, weeds) wrapped around the prop shaft. With the lanyard key in your pocket, look up the intake screen for the jet pump and see what is wrapped around the prop shaft. Once you remove that, your MPH should be right back to where it was.

dont go by looks on the plugs replace them yes there is a key but i dought it sheared change pugs first then let me know and i will hep u diagnose it
