Low freon switch prevent the compressor from running when there is not enough freon to carry the oil to lubricate it. There is almost always enough pressure to start it but as soon as it's running low pressure drops and the compressor stops.

SOURCE: AC does not cool. Compressor kicks on and off (Humms when trying to start, electrical smell)

There are a couple possibilities:

1. If this is the first time you've started them for the season, one of the compressors might be seized up from sitting over the winter. In which case, new compressor required.

2. If you've just had the compressor serviced including recharging the system, it's possible that the system is simply overcharged. This will stop the compressor from working and giving you the same symptoms as above. If this is the case, you should have the service people come back with some guages and recover some of the refrigerant and the compressor should be fine.

3. If the unit has been sitting and there is a slow leak then there is not enough pressure in the system to allow it to run. The compressor will shut down if there is not enough pressure, but since you say there is a smell, i really doubt this is the case.

Most likely it's #1 or #2 above. If you haven't had it serviced recently, then yeah, it sounds like you're in need of a new compressor.

Good luck.

SOURCE: duo-therm by dometic ac rv unit

I suspect that you have a bad selector switch for the on, off, low fan, high fan operation. If the selector switch is put into the off position everything should stop completely.

SOURCE: 13500 dometic ac for rv with anilog thermostat

My Unit is only about 5 years old; but it's working great now. I spoke to a man at an RV service department, he suggest replacing the thermostate and Jay box, which is the box inside my roof unit, accessable when I remove the filter. When I replaced the thermostate nothing changed, but the Jay box did the trick. The Jay Box came with a new thermostate anyway, and cost around $80. Good Luck

SOURCE: RV air conditioner. Compressor running, fan stops before cool

The fan motor is getting hot and going off on the internal overload in the motor.
This is caused by either a low voltage, a bad capacitor, or tight or dry bearings in the motor.
To check the bearings turn the power off to the unit, then spin the fan blade if it spins freely then the bearings are ok.
To check the capacitor you will need some kind of tester or you can buy a capacitor and replace it, that's what a lot of people do. They usually don't cost very much.
To check the voltage you will need a voltmeter and measure the volts at the unit.

Sounds to me like your fan is hitting something
Remove the cover and turn the fan by hand ( with the power off ! ) See what it is hitting

Duo Therm A/C (2009 Sabre RV) won't shut off

bad compressor relay on control board. The relay is not opening the circuit, allowing the compressor to stay running when unit is turned off. This overheats the compressor and opens a thermal disk shutting the compressor off. When thermal disk cools down, the compressor restarts under load and trips breaker.

My Duo-therm Brisk-Air by Dometic rv ac wont cool.(The fan runs )

Usually just listening closely will give you a rough idea where to look for problem. When you have the fan on and switch to cool, (with temperature turned down low obviously) do you hear any type of "moaning" sounds from AC unit, or see lights in RV dim slightly indicating that compressor is trying to engage? Is the breaker tripping when compressor tries to engage? Do you hear a "click" from AC unit when switched to cool? If none of that happens, then I'd start thinking thermostat, or compressor relay. Normally if it's a faulty capacitor, the compressor will try to engage but will make a "moaning sound" and usually trip the breaker due to excess current draw. Someone experience in electrical should be able to test relays etc, but whoever does work on it, should be aware that those capacitors, as well as hydro in general are very dangerous to work with. The ("zap",- Shock) that you can experience from a capacitor or hydro, can be fatal.

We turned the ac unit control knob in between the high cool and low cool, which turned off the ac unit, but messed it up where it shorts the circuit breaker when we try to turn it back on. What did we do?

YOU MIGHT OF JUST SHORT CYCLED IT . ALL AC UNITS NEED ABOUT 3-5 MIN TO EQUALIZE PRESURE ON COMPRESSOR BEFORE RE STARTING  . IF THIS IS RV AC MAKE SURE YOU HAVE WELDING TYPE EXTENSION CORD

AC is off but compressor cycles periodically

most likely your compressor contact is stuck closed, and will need to be replaced. if the fan also runs when the compressor comes on you may have a short between the t-stat and unit. hope this helps.
