These above range microwaves "hoods" automatically turn on a cooling fan even when the microwave is not in use. If you read the manuals you will see warnings about the fans automatically starting. Even when the microwave is not in use opening the door likely interrupts the power to the automatic cooling fan.
It sounds like it's time to get a new one. They have some that are relatively inexpensive these days. I usually check out http://bestmicrowavereview.com before purchasing any microwave.
the fan is designed to run after the unit has cooked its new technoligy the reason it does this is to remove all the moister from the inside of the unit as built up moister use to cause rust to form in the base of the unit .. so its perfictly normal
however the fan should not run for more than 1 minute.
I had a similar prob with another brand microwave. It is a defect and they recommended stop using it. Since mine was out of warranty, there was nothing they would do. That night, it came on by itself for the last time with a grand finale of grand finale's firework show. I had to jump on top of the fridge to unplug it. Totally freaked me out. Hint: don't buy cheap $49.00 microwaves. Spend some money and buy a good one or you might be homeless after your house burns down.
Sounds like you blew a device on the main board when you didn't unplug it first. The whole main timer board must be replaced to repair the unit. Pricey, sorry!!
