It's battery-operated and won't work even with new batteries correctly installed. Wife says when she steps on she gets a reading, but I don't. Should we trash this model? We have no paperwork to send.

Time for a new one. They were $17 new, and are now discontinued. Now you know why :>D No one knows this E4 error, but you could contact them direct. Your model doesn't appear to exist, so either it is a Chinese Clone Copy, or you have the model number incorrect?
Is battery installed correctly and cover back on? Try removing battery and turn it over and reinstall it. If it does not work scale is defective and will require replacement.
if the batteries are new and the battery terminals are clean and not corroded or broken, and the battery polarity is correct when they were installed. There must be a fault in the internal circuits of the scale, and a technician with the right tools, training, and experience will be needed to repair it.
Maybe time for a new scale.
