Mousepad doesn't work

Sounds like your mousepad is ghosting. This means it thinks you're tapping the mousepad as you type, which will make it type exactly where you nlast moved the curser to. First, try cleaning the pad thoroughly with a damp tissue, and dry it well... if that doesn't solve it, you could try adjusting the mousepad sensitivity controls on the control panel. Hope that helps.

If it is a new Laptop then I'll not suggest you to open it for cleaning because you'll void the warranty period. You can check for the latest touch pad driver and update it once. it may help you.

Check the mousepad settings in control panel. There are settings and programs that disable the mousepad when typing. A slight brush across the mousepad can send the cursor to odd places in your document.

There is also a small app that disables the mousepad when you type as well. Check your processe in task manager to see if there is such a program running in the background.

if the little button on top of the mousepad is in "off" position, the cursor won't move

All you have to do is to open up the mousepad to clean up dirts that may have accumulate inside the mousepad, because dirts are the most common issues that affect the effectiveness of mousepad, but if otherwise you have to get another to replace the faulty one...

Try installing / reinstalling your touch-pad drivers.

Go to this site, Choose your laptop make & model ("Notebook" ==> "Aspire" ==> "Aspire 5500")

Once done, select your windows from the "Operating System" drop-down menu. Then download the Synaptics Touchpad driver in the scroll-box at the bottom.

Run the installation and restart your PC.

Since it is a Laptop you can not just go over to the Scroll Bar. Move the arrow from the mouse over to the scroll bar. Hold on the left key below the mousepad. The scroll bar should turn a differnt color. Move the scroll bar up and down with your finger,using the mousepad.

Sounds like a malfunctioning touchpad. You could try an external mouse and disabling the touchpad in device manager.

Your mousepad is the problem. Do not use a pad with many colors or pattern. Use only one color on which your mousepad will slide. I found purple as best color to reflect light from an optical mouse. Also, avoid using glossy pads or sliding the mouse on glass.
