Those 'black bars' are the integrated preamp/output stages. This has benefits from a production standpoint and even from a quality standpoint since these modules have all the necessary feedback internal to them so using them, one can expect consistent performance without a a bunch of tweaking at the end of production.
If you would post any nomenclature you can uncover on the exposed side, one of us will be able to source them and they have typically not been that hard to find or expensive to purchase.
They are made by a number of different semi houses like National Semiconductor, Texas Instruments, Maxim and several asian houses particularly from Taiwan. The highest power module I've had to deal with was 40+40 watts but I don't recall the PN or maker.
They do die, but often, if you can extract the PN from them, you can find schematics of the innards from the manufacturer on line and use them for troubleshooting. Once you've seen the diagram, they are not all that exotic. PNs typically start with letters and end with numbers such as TDA 1657. Four digit numbers most often are the approximate date of manufacture; 3804 = 38th week of 2004.

Front speakers 5.1

Turn up the volume on the left or right speakers or turn down the center channel volume to meet your preferences. There should be a setting for that in most receivers.

Lux Audio 5.1 home theater speaker & Yamaha HTR 5540 AMP

configure ur PC (both OS audio and third party sound driver) for surround sounds. control panel- sounds and audio devices - speaker settings - advanced - speker settings. so this done. make sure u select the 6 input channel - the button is on the right edge near the volume knob. near the vol button there are two buttons for selecting input type with up down arrow. from that u can select the input type this will be indicated on the top front indicator. but with the 6 input channel selected all selections are preceeded. if u select stereo mode u will have left/ right audio only.
make sure u connect the input right. connect from computer to 6 channel input. main, surround, center and sub-woofer.  connect the spekers to main (L/R), rear(surround) (L/R), center and sub woofer to terminal marked sub woofer ouput. this done select like i said before the 6 channel button. that should do it.

I have a yamaha htr-5240 receiver. Also have a 6 speaker polk-audio surround set.Center,2 rear,2 front,& the subwoofer. The sub is a psw-250 with no sub out or LFE.I can't figure out what i've done...

First, look at the sub, their should be a switch for "auto" "off" "on" switch it to "on" Then use the Left input on the sub not the right. Left is for mono. Now, if you still dont have any sub, disconnect the RCA at the receiver and touch the end of the RCA, if the sub is on, you will hear a loud humm. Now, go back into the receivers Menu and go into manual setup, find "Audio" and select "Auto". That should do it. If not, put the receiver on "Tuner" and set the sound to 7 channel stereo (I'm not sure if the HTR series has this) or "Adventure" I'm a Yamaha RXV series Dealer so the names may differ. (check in manual for audio surround settings) Anyway, this should let you know if you've got all your spkrs working. Then make sure your TV's external audio is set to "Fixed" (it may be called audio out) depends on TV type. Scroll thru TV's audio menu. If you still have problems post a comment and I will help some more. Hope this helps

DVD plays partial sound

Check your speaker connections it sounds like you have a 5.1 or higher sound system. 5.1 means left front speaker, right front speaker, center speaker, right rear speaker, left rear speaker and subwoofer.

Voices in movies all get channeled to the center speaker (you can usually hear it a bit from the right and left front speakers as well). If your center speaker is disconnected or not working, you will only hear the background sounds.

Lost instructions

The 'Subwoofer' output on your receiver is used to connect to a powered subwoofer with a built in amplifier. Your KLH speakers use what is called a 'passive' subwoofer, it gets its power from the receiver and then passes the higher frequencies to the left and right front speakers after taking out the low frequencies for the subwoofer. A speaker system with a passive subwoofer is good for casual listening, but a powered subwoofer is required for really hearing low frequencies and rumble in movies. The KLH speakers you have were highly rated in their time for their price. The four satellite speakers and center channel speaker have very good sound compared to the little 'midget' surround sound speakers most people buy today.

Here's how you hook them up:

- The left and right front channels from your receiver terminals should go to the terminals on the subwoofer marked 'From Amplifier'
- Your left and right front speakers are then connected to the subwoofer terminals marked 'To Speakers', they do not connect directly to your receiver.
- Your center speaker is connected to your receiver terminals marked 'Center'
- Your rear speakers are connected to your receiver terminals marked 'Surround'

That should get you up and running. If the bass isn't good enough with the passive subwoofer, you can get a decent powered subwoofer like the Velodyne VX-10 for about $150 and 'kick it up a notch'. Good luck and enjoy....
