Maytag MMV5156AAS Microwave won't heat and has hum/buzz.

I have Maytag MMV5156AAS microwave. It won't heat food and has a loud hum/buzz to it. Online research points to the diode, capacitor or magnetron. If it's either of the latter, I'll get a new microwave. If it's the diode, I'd like to replace just that part. Do the diodes fail often in microwaves???

A failed diode isn't the most common failure, but it happens. And sometimes it's due to bad magnetron or a bad connection.

If the capacitor fails, it almost always shorts, which results in a blown fuse whenever you hit "Start" to run the microwave.

The magnetron on this model should have a 5-year warranty, in case that's relevant. Your owner's manual is here.

We have the service / repair manual for this model and have uploaded it to our site here to help you.

It will give you safety info, step by step help in disassembly, troubleshooting tips, and part numbers.

Here are some links you or someone you know can use for test help, but read their safety warnings first:

There should also be a "mini-manual" (tech sheet) hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting, testing, and locating components.

The microwave isnt heating.

If everything else works, like the light, motor, keypad but not heat, means that the magnetron circuit has failed. If it hums or buzzes loudly when heating food, means that the magnetron is shorted. The replacement part is almost as much as a new oven so it does not make sense to fix. Sorry.

My microwave is not heating the food. It is built into the walls of my kitchen in my condo/apartment. Can I fix this myself? How?

When the oven is running, does it make a loud buzzing or humming sound? If it does, then the problem is the magnetron, the part that generates the microwaves that heat the food. It not worth fixing since a new magnetron will cost almost as much as a new microwave. Ask your landlord that you need a new microwave oven. Sorry.

Everything works but it doesn't heat up the food. What could it be?

The part that generates microwaves that heat the food is the magnetron. Typically when the magnetron fails, it shorts out. When that happens the oven will produce a loud buzzing or humming sound. It typically not worth the cost to replace the magnetron, because it is almost as much as buying a new oven.

Doesn't heat up food

Hi

Thanks for using FixYa. Microwave not heating properly is caused by a power relay going bad, cold solder joint on the board and/or magnetron (this is only if it makes a loud hum/buzz sound). Also the door hooks and the door-release button should be checked. Please do rate the solution if the issue is resolved or post a comment for further assistance.

Thanks

Everything works on the microwave but wont heat food.

You need to remove the cover, (Power Unplugged!!) look for and check a long glass fuse (usually in a plastic housing)
It's 5000 volt and less then one amp rating.
It's a small wire inside fuse so check it with a meter.
If it's ok, it's most likely the Magnetron which is usually half the price of the machine.
If the fuse has blown, see if there is a black diode, 30-40 mm long, one end is screwed to the case.
Disconnect one end, If you have continuity both directions, it's failed causing the fuse to blow.
Replace that diode / high voltage rectifier and then the fuse.
You should be back in business.
