The accessory drive belt is a serpentine type belt that is driven by the crankshaft pulley
The belt drives the A/C compressor , alternator , power steering pump and water pump . Belt tension is maintained by an automatic belt tensioner .
Removal:
1. Using a wrench, rotate accessory drive belt tensioner counterclockwise until accessory drive belt can be removed from pulleys .
2. Remove accessory drive belt .
Installation:
NOTE: When installing drive belt on the pulleys, make sure that belt is properly routed and all V-grooves make proper contact with pulley grooves.
1. Install the accessory drive belt around all the pulleys except for the alternator pulley.
2. Using a wrench, rotate accessory drive belt tensioner counterclockwise until accessory drive belt can be installed on the alternator pulley .Release spring tension onto accessory drive belt .

Instructions needed for changing serpentine belt on 2002 Ford Windstar 3.8L
  • the serpentine belt routing chart, adhered to the fan shroud. This chart will show you the location of the belt tensioner.
  • 2 Pull the belt tensioner off the belt with the serpentine belt tool. Reach in with your free hand and slip the belt out of the tensioner's path and then slowly move the tensioner back into position.

    Take a look under your hood. You should have a sticker with the routing of your belt. It should be on the hood or on the radiator support. By the way....it is easy to do!

    Serpentine belt on 1992 dakota
    You don't mention which engine you have in your '92 Dakota, but it's likely the 3.3L and if so, here's the diagram. Even if your engine is not the 3.3L the principals for replacing the belt are the same.

    Get a serpentine belt tension release tool (local parts store) and use it to take the tension wheel away from the belt, which will make it loose enough to remove by simply pulling it off one of the pulleys (the alternator will be easiest) and then wiggle it out of the engine bay. The tool should come with a selection of heads for the different variations of tensioner arms/bolts. Once the belt is removed, replacing it is the reverse process.
