Jumpers on SATA drives were used in the past (on some drives) to force a legacy mode if the drive was SATA II and your motherboard could only handle SATA I.
ou control which one boots by the boot order in the BIOS

SOURCE: Duel Hard drive trouble

Your Os should have the main automatically, keep the other drives as slave unless they are usb then they should auto pick up when you start up your pc for sata drives you got to buy sata connectors and make sure your motherboard has more then just 1 sata connection. After you find out how many you have on your motherboard from bottom to top is 123 so if u have 3 then if you want like if you have a music hard drive and you want it to be first then put it at the bottom 2 and so on.. don't forget to set them as slaves

I have two hard drives in my tower How can I make it boot so that both hdd show in one os And it goes straight to windows

Windows will see both hard disks when Windows opens up.
For IDE/PATA hard drives the boot hard disk (C drive) must contain the Windows operating system and it must be jumpered as the Master drive. The other hard drive must be jumpered as a Slave drive if it is on the same data cable as the Master drive.
After Windows has been installed and this Slave drive has been partitioned and formatted Windows will see this hard drive as D: Drive which can be used as data storage etc.
If you have SATA hard drives you need to connect each SATA hard drive on its own SATA cable/controller.

Is there a jumper setting to run my hitachi 250 gb sata laptop hdd as a slave ?

There should be, look on the rear of the drive, close to the SATA and power connectors, you should see the jumper connections as well.

It varies from drive to drive, but the jumper setting could be engraved near the connector, look of SL for a slave setting.

If no, look on the label on the top of the drive, there should be the jumper settings listed there.
Some may be ambiguous, my last one offered the option of Master on / off. (Jumper in position 1 for on, no jumper for off) The off in this case was of course slave.

The result being, no jumpers - Slave.

How do I install my new hard drive as a slave to get additional storage?

Look your hardisk there in a jumper like blue color or any look at the top of your hard disk where to put the jumper to slave and another hard disk to master. but use this setting if you using one cable like IDE. but if use sata just put your sata cable to sata slot in your motherboard. follow the no. of your sata slot.

Jumper setting for slave drive

there is no such master or slave setting when SATA is used.
it is mainly used to tell the motherboard which one is master or slave when connected with IDE cable (PATA).
you don't need to worry about it as you are using a SATA HD.

the boot disk priority can be set in the BIOS
press del or F2 after you press the power button on CPU. you will be put with the BIOS/CMOS setup. go to boot priority and set accordingly, there is also an option to set the default hard disk in case you have more than one HD.

How to make sata hard disk a slave???

Look at the jumper settings. These jumpers are located near the data cable and the power port of the hard disk. Usually by default, this jumper is set to "Master". To make it a slave, just remove the black or blue jumper or please refer to the jumper guide table printed in you hard disk's label.

Master slave jumper settings on 250gb Maxline Plus II SATA

There are no master/slave settings on SATA drives because each drive has its own cable. The drive order is determined by what SATA port they are plugged into, or by the BIOS configuration.

Sata, ide

Update: SATA II drives do have jumpers to make them backwards compatible with 1.5 Gb/s (SATA II drives are 3.0 Gb/s). So if your system is older and can only handle SATA (first Gen) then you have to add a jumper (Seagate has the jumper setting on the drive but sometimes supplies no jumper i.e. you have to have your own).
