When is the DC16 red light supposed to change to green?

Most rechargeable devices the charging lights eventually turn green, our DC16 never has, 2 green and one red is the norm day after day without use. I also thought the battery life was a bit short, I timed it at 6 minutes, now I find it is supposed to be about 10 minutes. Considering the cost of a new battery I'm leary to replace it since this has been the modus operandi since day one. Any other suggestions?

You can see the manual for the DC16 here: (
https://www.dyson.co.uk/medialibrary/Files/Dyson/Support/downloads/UK/floorcare/Manuals/dc16_uk_manual_cb_120710%20pdf.pdf )

Following the troubleshooting manual on page 6, fully charging the battery takes about 3 hours, for a run time of 6 minutes, so I'm not sure where 10 minutes comes from. The battery ships partially charged and was supposed to have been charged 3+ hours before a first use to get a full cleaning span.

It's also noted that you can get red lights if the temperature is out of an optimal range, and if the filter is not seated properly, so these would be things to check as well.
On the general checking list - look at the contacts for the battery and for the charger, make sure nothing is bent or corroded. Corrosion can be generally treated with use of some fine sandpaper or steel wool - be sure to blow the area clear of any steel wool fibers if you go that route. A better electrical contact sometimes will allow charging to get above a threshold voltage that will let the 'I'm charged' light turn green.

Good Luck! :-)

SOURCE: I have the same problem as steve967 The dyson

Dear Michael_Stad,

I am going to sound like a broken record but here is my same answer to another person with the same problem.

I have I had the same problem with my Dyson DC16, where it only runs for a few seconds at a time with each trigger pull. My husband called Dyson (Canada) and without hassle they shipped us a replacement part which I just received this morning. The replacement part sent to us is: DC16 Main Body with Rating Plate. It is also under warranty for 1 year. The great customer service makes up for the flaw in the machine. Also, Dyson is aware of the problem. Hope this helps.

If it is within the warranty period get Dyson to replace it. If not, live with it until it fails completely, then buy a Hoover. Your computer board is starting to fail. That's not repairable.

Hello, what is the significance of the lights when charging? The red and the two green lights are flashing when charging. After the time charge (1 night), the Dyson DC 16 does not function, the battery...

yes the reason the green and red light were flashing the way they are is because its a warning to you that the battery is either no longer good or there is problems with your wireing. Also those vaccumes were designed to not charge when there to cold or to hot as a saftey issue.

UNIT WILL ONLY RUN FOR FEW SECONDS THEN THE BOTTOM OF THE 3 LIGHTS WILL FLASH

      Hi there,

I'm sorry to hear you're having difficulties with your DC16. A single flashing red light indicates that the battery needs to be recharged. When fully charged, all 3 LEDs should illuminate without flashing. However, if the red light continues to flash even after at least 3 hours recharging time, there may be a fault with the battery or charger assembly.

Please get in touch with us directly - one of our experts will be happy to run through some troubleshooting over the phone with you to determine whether the battery or the charger requires replacement. You can call us free on 08002980298 (UK), or 1866MYDYSON (US). We'll look forward to hearing from you.

Red light flashing constantly on dc16 when on charge, used to just stay permantly red without flashing until it went green when charged up.

I had a similar problem when I bought an after market 2Ah battery. Would stay solid red for a few seconds then flash red. I believe my problem was that the battery had gone into "sleep mode" I.e. it was discharged to the point that it "sleeps" in order to protect itself. So......I simply attached a domestic DC multi adapter to the terminals on the battery that are marked + and - (the 2 outside terminals on a DC16 Dyson battery). Switched on the DC adapter for around 10mins and this was enough to "wake" the battery. It now charges as normal attached to the DC16 in the Dyson charge mount.

For a pretty in depth article on lithium battery sleep have a look at this:

When I push the power button on my dc16 animal nothing turns on but a little red light by the red switch.

Hey Josh. According to the manual I found at this URL:
      http://media.dyson.com/downloads/us/floorcare/manuals/dc16_opmanual_usa.pdf
the red light that comes on when you try to use the unit indicates that the battery is fully discharged. When you plug the unit in to charge it, the same red light should be blinking to indicate the battery is in the process of charging.
Take a look at this and let me know if you are still having issues with the unit running, as there might be a problem with the wiring from the battery to the motor.
