If the pull cord does not turn the engine over, the starter pawls are probably not working properly.

Hi there,

There are quite a few different types pull start engagement mechanisms out there. As such, you would think replacement parts would be more readily available at the larger chain stores that sell the bulk of small engine powered devices. Not so.

I'm lucky to have found an excellent local small engine repair shop that keeps a nice variety of parts in inventory. It's a Mom and Pop place called Mr and Mrs Chainsaw. You gotta love it.

I brought a weedeater in to get parts for a similar problem to yours. Keep in mind, I'm a tech, I do ALL my own repairs.

The cost of the fix in parts and labor to replace the grab ears on my Husquavarna was so ridiculously low that for the first time I let someone else work on my equipment.

Is your device worth fixing? Absolutely.

The repair you need is straight forward and intuitive. The cost will be your time finding the parts.

If you can find your own Mr. Chainsaw? Doubly so.

Best regards

Mike

SOURCE: Weed Eater PE550 - How do you change the spring

Lay the unit on it's side, carborater down. Removed the 3 screws holding hold the gear assembly housing. Hold the clutch assembly inside a cloth with a wrench and remove the nut. Left from the starter cup as a stack and set aside. There is a starter retaining ring on the shaft. Pull this with a long nose plyers. If it spings free, it is easy to loose. Then left out the starter pully. The starter spring is under the pully. Remove it with a sharp pointed tool. A broken one is crusted in rust and will be snapped off inside the coil.

SOURCE: My Poulan Pro 150E pull cord will not engage to

Sounds like the starter dogs are broken. They are little plastic teeth that engage to turn the engine when you pull the cord. You'll need to replace the whole starter assembly to fix this.

My weed eater (toro), won't let me pull the cord at all. This weed eater doesn't take oil I don't think.

All internal combustion engines use oil of some description. I take it this is a 2 cycle engine and you have not added oil to the gas. If this is the case the engine is locked up, and must be replaced. Sorry.
