The dip stick twists out, and sometimes are tight, or hard to turn. be sure and replace it as tight as you can, back presure in the crankcase will blow it out if it's not tight

Many of the dip sticks that are removed from the top of the engines are "keyed" to go on one way. This is usually with the little picture of the oil can at the 3 o'clock position and turned clockwise to secure. I've had people insert the stick with the picture at the 9 o'clock position and they have to be pried off. Look inside the cover to see what I mean.

Can you send a picture highlighting that area? Most dipsticks are in the fill tube where it says "oil"

I have two different kinds of dip sticks. One turns to the left and the dip stick is on the bottom of the oil filler plug on top of the engine and comes out and one just pulls straight out like on a car engine.

My new Briggs engine has the dip stick built into the filler cap. To take the filler cap off I turn cap left and it just lifts straight out.

SOURCE: I can crank my murray gas lawn mower 6.5 quantum

Sounds like you will need to clean your carburetor.
Sometimes you can get by with priming it a few times, and letting it
run a few times like that and it will flush the gunk out of the jets,
but most of the time you will need to rebuild the carburetor.
If the mower is over a couple years old, then I also recommend that you
buy and install a new carburetor repair kit, because the diaphragm will
get hard and that will cause it to be hard to crank.
When you clean your carburetor and remove the jet screws, count the
number of turns it takes to seat the jets from their original position.
That way when you go to put the jets back in, you know how many turns
they were in/out.
Please rate me, Thanks
Good Luck, I hope this helped

SOURCE: need repair manual for briggs

After a very extensive cross reference session your engine is model number
10H902-0285-E1 (not provided by you so it took a while)

Your engine is covered in this repair manual:
http://www.mymowerparts.com/pdf/Briggs_&_Stratton_Service_and_Repair_Manuals_Spec_Charts/270962%20Single%20Cylinder%20L-Head%20BRIGGS%20&%20STRATTON.pdf

If there is a problem that your having I can help you if you would just elaborate. I could save you lots of time. The 2 most common failures of this engine is on the carburetor. The parts that fail are the diaphragm (Item 394) and the primer bulb (Item 976) of this link:
http://www.partstree.com/parts/?lc=briggs_and_stratton&mn=10H902-0285-E1&dn=57160004

Carb data is in section 3 of the first link.
Thanks for choosing FixYa,
Kelly.

Where do you put the oil in a MURRAY 500-Mulch.

I have two push mowers. One has the first style and the other has the second style oil dip sticks. You add the oil where the dip stick is at. I want to tell you when you add oil, the oil tend to get on the dip stick when you try to check the level.. To get a good reading on the dip stick you may have to check it 2 or 3 time. Wipe the dip stick each time. When you see the dip stick shows the same level on both sides of the stick(at least close) that is your level. The video with weedeater must be briggs and Stratton engine like my murray. That dip stick is on the muffler side near the back of the engine. Mine has the yellow cap also(I just tighten up with my hand not a wrench). I have had mowers with a cap with two little round rod sticking out the top of the cap. It was lower and more to the center of the mower..

Steve on the back of the engine is a square nipple about 8mm by 8mm. The oil will come out of there or you can take it out of the dip stick if you can rotate the engine.

How much oil does a 675 briggs & stratton 22" lawn mower take?

HI There try adding oil a bit at a time. They will only need minimum amount to lubricate the engine. Firstly put in about a quarter of a litre and check the dip stick after 10 mins.

Hi I have a Craftsman Lawn Mower 225 and i bought a 40w oil and put in it and it started leaking and ommiting huge white smoke. what should i do?

Hi Manny First thing is Drain all the oil back out. You have most certainly overfilled it. Try and get as much out as you can from the same place you filled it from. Leave it tilted back until it stops running and then put the mower level for half an hour. Check the oil level now and clean the spark plug and replace it. There will still be oil in the air filter due to over filling. Only put oil in one egg cup at a time until its below max on the dip stick. Run the mower for 20 minutes and burn the smoke off. It may smoke for a few times but thats ok.

I have a troy bilt mower with a briggs & stratton engine. How do I change the oil?

There should be a drain plug on the underside of the mower deck. Raise that side of deck, remove the plug and drain the oil. Replace the plug and add new oil. Hope this helped.
