When turning ignition key on you should hear a clicking noise at the fuel solenoid. If no noise check electrical system, (earth etc)

SOURCE: I have a Brigs&Straton 6.5 Quantum lawnmower will not stay running. I can keep it running by restricting the amount of air entering the carb with my finger (choking it) The mower will start if it

the problem is in your carb.,at the bottem of the carb. there is a bolt that threads in to the carb.pinch off the fuel line so that no fuel comes out after the fuel bowl is off the mower.now look into the bolt that you took off.there should be a hole oppisit the head of the bolt.there are also two holes that go through the sides.these holes are the fuel intake to the carb,the hole in the center is the fuel nozzle.most likely you have dirt blocking this hole and not letting the motor get enough fuel to run.thake some carb cleaner and spray it in the hole.take an air hose then blow the nozzle out.while you have the screw out take the bowl off and check to see if there is any water or dirt in the bowl.after cleaning.reinstall the bowl and start mower again.should be running ok now.if not let me know and i'll guide you through another fix.let me know if this helped or not................

SOURCE: Engine only runs with choke full on. Dies when off full choke.

Hi Dave, it sounds crazy, but try this. Check your gas cap. It could be clogged, causing a vacuum to occur in the tank, and therefore not allowing the carb. to take on gas. It usually take 10-15 min. for this to occur. The next time you run the mower and it starts to stall out, loosen the gas cap and see if it begins to run again. If it does, then you know that the gas cap is clogged.

SOURCE: craftsman eager-1 3.75 mower will not stay running

Most of the starts but dies problems are caused by dirt/water/debris in the carburetor float bowl.

You can try draining the gas out of the carburetor float bowl by removing the float bowl nut located on the bottom of the carburetor.
Make sure the hole in the float bowl nut are clean. If the problem persists after draining the float bowl nut you will have to remove, dis-assemble and clean the carb with compressed air and carb cleaner.

SOURCE: Honda 160cc mower engine starts and dies.

Your carbeurator is crudded up. Get a can of aerosol carbeurator cleaner at any auto parts store. Remove the air filter and spray two squirts of cleaner into the air intake. Start the engine and keep it running by squirting more carb. cleaner into the air intake. WIth a little patience you will clean your carb. and solve your problem.

SOURCE: Honda HR 17 lawn mower dies after it starts

01 Fuel tank cap? Loosen it to see if it is plugged.
02 Possible fuel line obstruction? Disconnect at carb to make sure there is adequate fuel flow.

Briggs&stratton 19.5hp - starts for few seconds then dies

Could some debris in the tank, fuel filter may need changed, If it has a fuel pump it could be weak or worn out, Check for fuel and vacuum line cracks, This would cause it to suck air instead of fuel.

Still working on a fix for my cub cadet lawn tractor. Starts and runs for a few seconds then quits. I am wondering if this symtom fits a carbuerator solenoid that isn't working. The solenoid clicks once...

if your talking about the solenoid sticking out the bottom of the fuel bowl that is just the fuel shutoff solenoid. when you turn key on that gets 12v hot all the time your running. when you turn off mower the solenoid extends outward inside the bowl to shutoff fuel going up to the venturi. if you take the bowl off and hold it against metal for ground you can watch the solenoid pull inward when you turn key on and outward when key off.

Engine will start but only run at choke or half choke and low throttle sputteres and or dies if you try to increase to full throttle and dies if you take off choke

Check fuel pump delivery for adequate flow. If when choke enrichment is applied and it runs, then dies when choke is off, fuel flow is inadequate and needs choke enrichment to compensate. Also, if engine dies or chokes when increasing rpms, this will be a symptom of too little fuel. Check fuel flow at pump, then, if flow is good, check for carb blockage, unscrew the jet and inspect, check the operation of the solenoid at the bottom of the bowl, it has a wire attached to it. Trace that wire to where it plugs in, unplug it and touch it to the positive pole of the battery, it should retract. If not you need a new solenoid that has the job of metering in gas to the inner bowl below the jet assembly.

Riding mower wont run unless choke is full on and dies when choke is shut off

Probably a failed or disconnected fuel shut-off solenoid. It's located on the bottom of the float bowl. Check that there is battery voltage present when ignition is on. If so, solenoid has either failed, or jammed due to gum build-up.

Cleaned gas and changed fuel filter. Mower only

There are a number of things that can cause this, depending on the engine fitted. Assuming a Briggs & Stratton V-twin...

Check that the carb solenoid under the float bowl is connected, has battery voltage when the ignition switch is at 'RUN', and is functional.

As a quick check, with the engne OFF, turn key to 'RUN' there should be an audiable 'click' from the carb if the solenoid is working.

After that, check that the fuel pump is delivering fuel (disconnect output, and crank engine). SHould be a good flow.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, a few possibilities you may want to check/explore:
  • stale gasoline;
  • clogged fuel filter (inside the tank above the fuel shutoff valve;
  • clogged, bocked, varnished, gummed carbs, jets, air pin holes;
  • stuffed air filter/box;
  • vacuum leak (rubber coupling, manifold side);
  • air leak (airbox base assembly seated/fitted on the carbs.
Basically, a general cleanup of the fuel lines, tank and the carbs. Sitting for some time tends to leave varnish like coating on most parts.

Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa. Happy Holidays.
