How can I make my tomtom find local places I want?

I hope you have TomTom home installed on your computer. If you already have it, then it is pretty simple. Else, follow this procedure. 1. Connect the USB cable to the TomTom. (connecting this end is difficult, so connect this end before you power on. In fact, this is the only part I hate about a TomTom) 2. Switch on the TomTom. 3. Turn your computer on. Once the booting of the computer is finished, 4. Connect the other end of the USB cable to your computer (note Tom should be on at this point of time) 5. wait a few seconds. 6. You computer will first install Tom and then ask you whether you want to install TomTom home software. say yes and complete installation. (just follow the screen prompts) 7. Create a login (register) and password. If you have already have all this done earlier. follow this procedure. Connect tom to your computer open TomTom home software. wait till it update and settle to the Tomtom home home interface page. It will say manage your Tom the easy way here on top. And you will see a few buttons with: Add map, Add traffic, voices, safety camera etc. click on Add traffic, voices, safety camera button. On the page that opens, Click on Point of interest button. On the next page that opens, you will see a list of POIs. The easy way to find what you want here is to use the box next to search. Type in Home depot and click on search. You will see list of Home depot locations. I guess you are looking for Canada home depot locations. If yes, scroll down to Home depot Canada. select it and click add. Wait till that information is added to your Tom. once finished close Tom home software and safely remove your Tom from computer. Switch off Tom. switch on Tom. Search for Home depot in your POI list. This time around you will see you get one that is closer to you provided the latitude / longitude information is there in the list you downloaded. Most chances are that it will be there.

Garmin POI, GPI, GPX, GDB and CSV and how not to be confused

GPX or CSV file can be converted to the proprietary Garmin format GPI format (Garmin Points of Interest) format using the Garmin POI loader v2.54 OR use the one bundled with the Garmin Map Source v6.15.11 at the time of posting if there is also a BMP file of the same filename then this will be added to the Waypoints Symbol.
If you put all your POI that you want to be added to the Garmin POI then place all them in the same folder prior to starting the POI Loader and they will be placed into sub-menus otherwise it will select the single file entries only.

However the Garmin Mapsource can't open this GPI format it is specifically for the SATNAV Device only open GDB, MPS, GPX and LOC files can be opened as standard. There are two ways that I know of that will convert this GPI back into CSV or the POI format if required you might like to open the POI content in the Map Source program.

First this can be done using GPI2GPS it does however cost 15 EUROs or its older brother GPSConvertor for an extra 20 EUROs will convert to all formats for all makes of device including Tom-Tom, Garmin and many others.

Secondly you can convert POI file in CSV format directly to GPX (exchange format) using the excellent GPXtoPOI Convertor v1.1.8 then import directly into the Map Source if you also want to use BMP that has been downloaded in Map Source you can replace the 8 default custom waypoint symbols located on your computer with your own or from the Tescos.ZIP file in this example that contains the CSV and BMP.

You can open these symbols with a graphic editor and use them as templates for creating your own symbols. You can add up to 64 custom waypoint symbols. These symbols must be in .bmp format and must be named numerically from "000.bmp" to "063.bmp." Custom waypoint symbols can be 16 x 16 pixels (small) or 24 x 24 pixels (large) and up to 32-bit color

Also check out my other POI tip HERE for help on how to create your own BMP's for use with your Garmin using Adobe Photoshop

It will also convert any GPX format into CSV format for use with the POI loader using the other button on the menu maybe this program would be best called GPXtoCSV instead to avoid confusion

.
And this one I saved for last If you want to transfer images from the Garmin use xImage and have your Garmi SATNAV connected.

For a full list of all POI sources then visit the Gamin POI Source another great website full of loads of useful tools is www.freegeographytools.com

If you are unable to use xImage it means that you unit is not compatible for example the Nuvi 250 will not be found and you may see this window

Tom Tom 910 map free update

nope im afraid you will have to cough up for the new maps (map corrections etc will only show new one way directions, and new or adjusted POIs), might be a good idea to wait till brand new maps are available before you splash any cash, good luck

My Tom Tom will Not Find GPS signal anywhere I go.

Do you have some of those POIs ticked to appear on the map ?
Mine ceased to pick up any signal as soon as I ticked a load of them...........
Couldn't get a signal for three days.
I unticked them all and it connects within seconds again.
Don't ask me why.

Tom Tom navagation files out of place

Try putting the files like this:
In My Device/iPAQ File Store/iPAQ GPS, put the folder with your country name (in my case it says Australia), the "Navigator" folder and the "GPS" and "Map ID" files.
In My Device/My Documents/Tom Tom you should have a file thats called something like "Australia-3bc66a12" (will be different for other countries), and another called "TTToday" and any POI files you've created.
See how that goes. Otherwise, you may be able to reinstall TomTom software from the original disk if you have it. Any map upgrades you've bought will need to be reloaded from TomTom Home
