Or the friction nut (one on each transmission) is too tight. These are located just in front of the axel, they go through a slot, the washer behind the nut should turn freely

Have you checked out the seat safety switch and also is your mower capable of cutting in reverse? There are aslo safety switches on some models that kill the blades when backing up. Check these and see if you can find an issue with one of these. Sounds like one of the safety switches is going bad and killing the blades and then restarting them, if not then you may have a bad electric clutch or a loose wire on the clutch. Let me know what you find.

on the bottom of the engine there is a bolt but if there was little to no oil they will not warr it most shops don't rebuild anymore the just replace the whole engine where is it you live?
