Sounds like a firmware issue. Happened to me after I had an update. I was told by Sony to wait for another update. Turned out it fixed the problem. Also check on your memory, if you're running low..delete some etc...might resolve. Lastly hold down the front power button for 5 seconds until you hear 2 beeps release it and this should reset. if the disk is a Blueback, most modern PS2 consoles won't touch it. bluebacked disks still have their data stored in CD format rather than in a Data DVD
to play a Blueback 1. turn on the unit without a disk in 2. press Triangle on "browser" 3. scroll up to the top item and press triangle again 4. turn "Diagnostic Mode" ON 5. back out with circle, and start the browser 6. put your disk in with the browser on. is should read the disk
some disks will still cause the red screen (like cheat devices) occasionally
Turn on the PlayStation 2 and remove any disk that may already be in the device. Then insert a DVD, preferably one that will prompt you for the parental control code. Insert the code and allow the DVD to begin playing.
Press the "Select" button once the movie has started. This will bring up a menu. Find the "Settings" icon, and press "X" to enter the "Settings Menu." Scroll down and select the "Parental Controls Menu" and press "X."
Reset the "DVD Parental Control Level" to "Off," which will allow any DVD to play without prompting the user for the passcode. You may also choose to set it to level 8, which is the least stringent level.
Do not exit the menu after inputting the new settings. Instead, eject the DVD and remove it. This should cause the PlayStation to reset with the new settings enabled. If it does not automatically reset, then manually reset it by either flipping the switch in the back, or by holding the reset button in the front down. Leave the device off for a few seconds.
Turn the PlayStation back on and input a DVD that previously required the passcode. The PlayStation should now play the DVD without prompting you for the passcode. If it does, then you're finished. If it still prompts you for the passcode, then start again at step one and try it again.
This is a problem with the Playstation 3 software becoming corrupt. It is very easy to fix if you follow my simple steps.
Please note, this method will erase your hard drive so any save games you had will be lost. All your online trophies will be preserved.
Step 1.
Turn your Playstation 3 off into standby mode (red light on)
Step 2.
Press and hold the power button. The Playstation 3 will beep when you first press it, then beep again 5 seconds later and then beep once more and turn off back into standby mode (red light on). You must now release the power button.
Step 3.
Press and hold the power again. The Playstation 3 will beep when you first press it, beep again 5 seconds later then there will be 2 quick beeps together. When you hear these 2 quick beeps release the power button.
Step 4.
Your Playstation 3 will now start up with a screen asking you to connect a controller via USB. Connect your controller and then press the PS button.
Step 5.
A menu will now be displayed on screen. Select option 5 "Restore PS3 System". This will then ask you to confirm that you wish to go ahead with the system restore. Accept whatever the Playstation 3 says.
The Playstation 3 will now go through the system restore process and re-install the system software back to out of the box status. You will have to set your user name, date and time and network settings again.
Once you have completed the above, the Playstation 3 will restart and spring back to life again!
I hope this helps all of those out there who are suffering this problem
