I thought my porter cable 6 gal air compressor had moisture in the tank, so i attempted to remove the drain plug. When I replaced the drain plug, it leaks air. Can I reuse the old drain plug? It appears that there is some kind of goopy putty on the end of the plug that acted as a seal.

Campbell Hausfeld has 66 air compressors in the market. And it doesn't even include the inflators. These compressors are of ten types. But most of them have the same operational process.
The process written in this article is suitable for almost all compressors. You might have to do one or two steps more or less than what we have described. But that is also mentioned in the article.
Yes use pipe thread seal. The center is turned to open and close no need to remove plug. If is frozen replace.

Yes...the drain valve on the bottom of the tank is just a standard 1/4 Drain Pedcock that you can purchase at most hardware store.
You can also find these in the hardware section of Lowes or Home Depot where they sell the Air Compressors.
