Just used my new DVD for the 1st time and play back is in black and why and can't work out how to rectify

if you are using S-video cables for your video, try replacing the cable. svideo has 2 lines in it, one for color (chroma) and another for brightness (or black and white-ness (lumina) if one of those little pins is broke, or missing, or the cable is bad, this may be the case.

If you are using the s-video jack to connect the DVD to the TV, the jack could be loose or the wire could be bad. The s-video cable has 2 signals, the black-and-white (luminance) and the color (chroma). If the chroma signal is not getting through, the picture will be in black and white.

Use a scart lead to connect it to the TV, that should cure it.

Try to check the TV system it might be set to PAL or NTSC...
