Can you put a supply line back on that has come off inside fuel tank with fuel filter

Hi Karen,
Usually the vent line tube (should only be just inside the tank with a plastic coupling on the end to keep it from backing out) is the shortest of the lines. The longest one will be the fuel supply line and does need a filter on the inside of the tank, but not on the outside. Lengths vary on each machine. just make sure the fuel line reaches the bottom of the tank on the inside and there's enough line to reach the carburetor on the outside.

Buy some new fuel line then put the line in from the motor side into the tank and feed up and through the opening on the tank. Then you can put on a new filter with a tiny clamp then put it back into the tank making sure the filter is resting on the bottom.

I am not familiar with your brand of machine, BUT... many machines have similar fuel line setups. Here\'s what I know.



Most carburetors have built-in fuel pumps that suck fuel from the tank. As the fuel pumps generally suck more fuel than the engine needs, there is a "fuel RETURN line" from the carb back to the fuel tank, which returns the excess fuel back to the tank. There is usually nothing attached to the end of this line inside the tank.



The "other" fuel line is from the tank TO the carb, and it usually has a tiny, weighted, fuel filter attached to a long piece of fuel line INSIDE the tank. This long, flexible, floppy piece of tubing allows fuel pickup regardless of how, what position, the machine is held.



The purpose for this set-up is threefold:

1. The filter, of course, is to keep "trash" out of the fuel system and,



2. The "long" fuel line inside the tank is to allow the filter/pick-up end of the fuel line to move around in order to pick up fuel from ALL points inside the tank,and



3. The weight is to forcefully "carry" the filter/pick-up intake to the low point ["bottom"] of the tank regardless of the orientation of the machine and fuel tank!!!

On the machines that I replaced the fuel lines, to replace the suction line I had to use a longer than normal [when finished] length of line.



I first had to "fish" the filter, weight, and any nipples and or washers out of the tank.

1. I then inserted the new line into the tank from outside through the small hose opening hole.



2. To start, I put MUCH MORE [extra] line into the tank so that I could fish-out 5 or 6 inches thru the filler opening, allowing me to finish the connection of the filter, weight, nipple(s) and/or washers outside the tank where I had room to work!!!!!



3. The use of nipples with washers expands the hose enough to keep the assembly from easily falling or pulling from the tank.



4. Once all of the "in-tank" assembly was done, I then gently pulled the extra fuel line back out of the tank hole, thus pulling the weighted filter and connectors back into the tank. I left enough "loose" tubing inside the tank to allow the weighted fuel pick-up end to reach anywhere inside the tank.



5. The final step was to route the line to the suction nipple on the carb, cut the line to proper length, and attach it over the carb suction/intake nipple.

Not being familiar with your machine, I can only hope this allows you to fix your machine! Good luck!!!!!

Before you begin, make a mental note or take a picture of how the fuel line runs from the tank to the carburetor so you will be able to put the replacement in the same position.
On most chainsaws you need to take some wire, make a u-shaped end, which will be used to grab the fuel filter in the fuel tank. Drain the fuel in the tank. Disconnect the fuel line from the carburetor. Generally there are two lines on the carburetor, one for fuel, the other line creates suction used to pump fuel and is connected to the motor, not the fuel tank . Just disconnect the fuel line, it is usually on the side of the carburetor and will leak gas when disconnected. Once this is done, using the wire, gently grab and pull the filter towards the filler opening and using needle nose pliers grab the fuel line above the filter and pull. The problem you may have, is if the fuel line is in bad shape it will break, But once you have the filter off the fuel line, the fuel line can be pulled out from either the inside of the tank or from where it comes out of the tank and goes to the carburetor. Once it is removed you are ready to put the new fuel line in.
It is best to put the fuel filter on the fuel line next. It easier than trying to put it on inside of fuel tank going out. Spray some WD40 or equivalent, on the outside of the gas line, to help the line squeeze through the whole in the back of the tank, which it will have the go through. From the outside of the tank, where the fuel line comes out, fish some wire inside the tank and put the fuel line on the end of it, making sure not to pierce or damage the fuel line. If needed a piece of black tape will hold the wire better and help fit the line through outside hole. Once the fuel line is on the wire, pull it through carefully out the other side of the tank. It is best to use your fingers to pull the line through the outside hole, it makes it less likely the line will get torn or overstretched as line goes through the hole because of the extra rubber used on the line to seal the tank from inside and outside. Once the line is pulled through and seated, run the other end to the carburetor and you are done.

Your Craftsman trimmer is made my Poulan/Weedeater and uses 2 different sized lines. The smaller diameter line is the fule supply line and runs from the pickup filter in the tank to the supply side of the carb. The supply side is usually the lower of the fuel nipples on the carb. Make sure to put enough line in the tank so the filter can drop to the lowest point of the tank while you are trimming. The larger diameter line is the return line, and will connect to the nipple on the carb that is closest to the primer bulb. From the factory, the return line went into the tank and had a small clear plasted connector on the end to prevent it from slipping back out of the tank. This fitting does not connect to anything in the tank, it is merely a return line. If the return line fitting is missing, just make sure to leave a couple of inches of line in the tank. If the filter is missing, you MUST replace it...it will save you from having to clean the carb out every 10 minutes of run time.

Use new fuel line. There should be two things (besides fuel line) in the fuel tank. The small line has a (1) fuel filter attached and is routed to the lower outlet on the carb. This is the fuel supply line. Make sure there are a few inches of it inside the tank. (say enough to reach other side of tank). The larger line should have a (2) nylon connector inside the tank holding it. The connector stays right at the tank hole. That larger line goes to the closest outlet on the purge bulb. The other fitting on the purge bulb should have a larger line that connects to the upper fitting on the carb.
Feed enough length of fuel line thru tank holes to pull them out where cap is to put on the filter and nylon connector...then pull them back thru. WD-40 will aid in this procedure or any light oil.

The fuel filter is in the fuel tank. Before removing make a sketch of where the fuel lines connect to. Empty the tank and use a flash light and look inside the fuel tank to see which line has the filter on it. There's a retainer on the fuel line up against the fuel tank on the outside. Use a small screwdriver to remove this retainer. It looks like a washer. Remove the fuel line from the carburetor and using needle nose pliers pull on the old filter and remove it from the filler hold with the fuel line still connected. You should use a new fuel line the same diameter as the old one. From the outside feed the fuel line through the hole. It will be tight. Push it through until you can get a hold of it through the filler hold. Put the filter on then pull the fuel line back. Pull until the filter is up against the fuel tank. Put the retainer on the line and while pulling the fuel line tight press the retainer up against the tank. Attach the end of the fuel line back on the carb.

Most have a plastic retainer (looks like a washer) holding the line up against the outside of the tank. Use a screwdriver to pry it off. Cut the line off and push it through the tank. Use needle nose plyers to remove the filter from the tank. Lubricate the new line with a little alcohol and push it from the outside of the tank to the inside. Grab the inside with needle nose plyers and pull on it. Put a new filter on then pull it back from the outside until it is snug against the tank. Put the retainer back on while pulling on the line to keep it snug against the tank.

You can cut the line, push the fuel filter and fuel line attached to it out where you fill it with gas. When you are ready to put new line in, cut the fuel line at an angle so you can push it in the hole. Keep pushing in until it comes out the fuel tank fill hole. Attach your new fuel filter to the line and pull it back until the fuel filter lays in the bottom of the tank. Then cut the line to length and put it on the carburetor. Take the other piece hook on the carburetor and put it back in the tank.

Dear Oilzum, The fuel filter on most cars of that era are back by the fuel tank(where supply line comes out of tank), and usually on the inside of the frame. Find the fuel line from the tank towards the engine and you will find the fuel filter. Most are around 6 inches long and 3 inches around. Call me back if you need more help. quicbric(volvo man)
