You have a safety switch that is bad or not making connection. There is a clutch safety switch and a seat switch. Try to set the parking brake and see if the blades start, if they do then die when removing the brake, it is probably the seat switch.

SOURCE: mower quits when engaging mower deck of husqvarna yth 2348

Try putting a jumper wire on the wire going from the engine to the seat. Take that plug and put a wire from one side to the other. Be careful not to cut your feet off when engaging deck.

SOURCE: engine chokes & dies when deck PTO engaged...

you need to start with your electric clutch and then backwards to your idler pulleys and deck spindles and bearings.
your electric clutch should almost stop the blades instantly when disengaged ,check the center bolt in the clutch to be sure it is tight also
remove the belt from the electric clutch and energize clutch any noise? sometimes the bearing goes bad in the clutch itself.
check all of your 3 spindles for noise and loose. remove belt and spin by hand and listen for quiet and they should turn free with no binding
check blade tightness
any item the belt goes around needs to be looked at for secure and operable.

What causes a riding mower to die when engaging the blade

safety switch in the seat and in the brake. if one of those is open, engine will die when you engage the blades. Owners manual should have wiring diagram so you can bypass switches to test (if you have brake applied and are sitting in the seat and that is when it is dying).

When I lower the mowing deck on my Murray 17.5hp riding mower white smoke pours out and it dies. The engine runs fine until the deck is lowered.

Does it make a squealing noise then too? The white smoke is probably a belt burning up. Either you have a locked up blade spindle, or the belt is off, and rubbing. Check the deck belt(s) and the clutch assembly.

What causes JD 260 riding mower to start dying when you engage the mower deck? It runs fine when you disengage the mower deck.

It's the safety system that causes this. There is a switch under the seat that should activate when you are sitting in the seat. The switch can come loose or fail, the mounting can break, or the wires can come loose - any of these would cause the "engine dies when I engage the mower deck" behavior. Lift the seat, examine the switch. Rmove the switch and keep the plunger in with a piece of tape. Fixed? Then it's just the mounting or adjustment. Not fixed? It's the switch itself or the wires or connectors to it.

It starts pinging and dies when you engage the mower

I know you don't want to hear this, but you've got some serious problems here. The motor needs to be inspected before it puts a rod through the block.
