Dont have the manual in front of me...recollect that there's two types of warnings. The pulsating warning is oil (starts with 30 minutes of oil left) or the fuel filter (or sperator, something like that) may have water in it. Running outboard with cover off, is a little black box that would have a red light lit if that's the case. If oil full & no red light, may be oil injection system...would also check to make sure lines aren't pinched, etc. Mine has been specific to oil the two times its gone off.
The full non-pulsating is engine overheat. Not sure beyond that.
Not much, but hopefully gets you going.

This means a shear pin or rubber hub may have broken. Take the prop off and look at the center. If there is rubber kind of crumbling thats the problem. Or if you see something like a broken nail-thats a shear pin. However if neither is true then unplug the sparkplug boots. Put the throttle in forward and turn the shaft by hand. If it still freewheels the shiftrod came apart inside the housing. You may want to take it in because the attaching parts or something in the gearbox came apart.

The last comment you made about the hose cuffs and running good- Was that in gear or neutral? If you are using the boats throttle lever there is a cam lever for the choke which limits the throttle. It may be out of sync in the control box. If you have operating cables disconnect them at the engine and see what range of motion you have in the motor itself. Then hook up the controls and see if the cables prevent the motor from opening the carbs.
SOURCE: boat motor runs fine with the ears on. won't rev up in the water
Check the prop, may just be the hub slipping.
SOURCE: outboard motor won't run under load
I have 1969 5hp Johnson. Starts and runs good, but will only push a 14ft row boat slow at low to medium rpm. When at higher rpm the the motor just revs up and the boat slows down to almost nothing just like it has seaweed around prop.Any help would be great.
