How old is the battery? They will only take a certain number of charge and discharge cycles. When worn out, they will charge, but fail very quickly and always in the middle of use.

As far as I know, the backup battery is not user-replaceable. You may need to take the camera to a repair shop for replacement of that battery.

The XS has a history of defective main circuits and this sounds like that.

It will have to go to Canon as it requires software to replace and only Canon has it

check the battery door switch - may sure the little flippy arem is not broken, or has been pushed out of the way so it is not operated by the battery door

Check to see that the "Greyscale" tab hasn't been set, and it is set for color printing this is in printer properties.

I had similar problems when I first installed the printer and after different tests we found out that the Magenta ink print head was faulty. Changed head to a new one and problem solved. You will need to recalibrate and do paper set up's again.
